I think once you think you are an adult, you want to try and do things your way. Doesn't always work out, but I guess that's where learning from your mistakes comes in to play. Some learn, some keep repeating them. All a part of the growing process.

personality has been shown to be pretty much equal parts genetic and a product of the environment.

many of the personality traits are inherited. But at the same time many traits are the result of upbringing and life events

I am 2nd of 4; all raised in the same house but our experiences were a bit different. My father was career military and retired when I was 15. My younger siblings did not experience the same things I did (moving every 2 years).

With that said I think a lot has to do with genetics. Though the same parents produced all 4 children, there are great similarities and differences. I also feel birth order plays a role... but not as much as genetics.

I am just how I was in school!

Never could conform.

But, myself, my brother and sister had a good up bringing and though we all went our seperate ways...we turned out to be productive and responsible citizens with our own unique personalities.

My Mom and Dad did a great job!

Ditto Krupa, just amazed at what different people we are. How we love, how we fight, how we live. Ya know?

Hi, new guy here.
There are a lot of dynamics determining personality development, such as: position in the family (first child, middle child, youngest child), social environment, and yeah, those jerks in high school can influence our self-image as well as the choices we make that we think are right at the time.
The shrinks and sociologists can go on an on about this for decades, but I think (IMHO) that our self-esteem and self-image are what drive us to become what we become as we develop. Too bad all those kids that are targets in high school can't know what we as adults have learned!!
Thanks for letting the newbie chime in!!think noway

My parents raised three daughters. Same house, same rules, same love, same opportunities. How did we become so different? Did my life experience and choices make me who I am or can we blame it on some weird cosmic twist of fate. How did you become who you are?

i have 3 aunts who are worlds apart with the way they do things. my mother is the most normal, but she's uptight and raised me the same way.

I've always had an apartness from others, for as long as I can remember. I was told by a psychiatrist that it's because, due to my family environment, I knew, even as a toddler (possibly earlier), that I wasn't going to be getting any nurturing. I agree with him 100%.

.....and I grew up in a 2-parent household and have 4 sisters.....
