I hear a lot of depressing news on television about how tough things are.

Has anyone here felt the effects of it?

If so, how?

I'm not going to say that my employer is immune to problems, but I work in an industry that always has a demand for it's product.

So far so good.

I have family members who are losing their jobs. Each of us has a relative staying with us temporarily.

I've been jobless (laid off) since August and still appealing my unemployment, losing my vehicle, being sued for breaking a lease at a home I rented 3 weeks before the sudden job loss.

But I keep my sense of humor and I keep trying to find work. Good days and bad. All new territory for me.

I build stuff for "high end" houses...10 - 20 mill apiecd. It has not seriously effected me yet, but, things are a little slower than they were last year at this time. Test will be when the snow melts. Have to see if they still building them...lol

The poor man's stock market:

My sister's husband was collecting and hauling scrap metal for a few extra dollars and when the stock market crashed, the price of metal went down and the gas prices were high.

One day he was getting $325.00 a ton for his scrap and the next week only could get $20.00 a ton. So he stopped hauling and selling scrap and started buying it when it was low.

Just like the stock market. (It was his version of the poor man's stock market, buy low sell high.)LOL

Then the gas prices went down, and the price of metal went up a little so between the two things, he could make a profit.

In a stroke of good luck, I sold my business last year, paid cash for a new home here in Tucson and found a tenant for my house back east. I live cheaply and have enough safe investments to ride this out. Word of advise to those of you still working. Squirrel something away each week, it doesn't have to be much, but let it build and collect interest. Even just 10 dollars a week will add up over the years.

Why is it a stupid question to ask? I ask because I am genuinely interested how people are directly being effected.

I know the news media likes to put their own spin on things and I am interested in the news from the source of the people.

My line of work had been affected well before the recession. In fact, things started going downhill after ex-Prez Bill Clinton signed NAFTA into law, which was pretty much the death-knell for the middle-class worker.

It's been a fight to survive ever since, and it's gotten worse as the years have progressed.

So yes- I've been severely affected by the recession... and then some.
