I've been running AVG for a while (freeware) and I haven't had any trouble with it.. a couple of things have been quarantined but one is something I know didn't have any viruses (viri?), it just had the name trojan in the filename. it was a screen saver from STI guns which showed the inner workings of their 1911 hanguns

anyways, I haven't seen it pick up any real virus attacks. I can't tell if I've just been lucky and not gotten any, or if things aren't being detected.. it updates daily and I'm not having any troub;e with my pc.

just polling the community for feedback on this AV software...

Used AVG for several years. Started having a few difficulties about 6 months ago with updates and such so I switched to "Avira" Ativirus Personal.
Also Freeware and very excellent. I like it better than AVG.

I've been using avg for awhile, it scans once a day. Seems ok!

yeah, mine's been running well too. I just keep hearing about worldwide virus attacks and so on. But I hardly ever see it catch anything at all.

running a little too well, if you know what I mean..

I have used AVG for a long time now, basically happy with the results, however, I now use NOD32, which is much faster and uses less resources.

Those are my main reasons for now liking Avira.
Much smaller footprint and faster too.

I use AVG...in my last virus attack, I did a scan, and it reported no viruses and about 250 threats....whatever is meant by threats...Later, when I checked my virus vault, there was a trojan horse in there. wtf?

AVG is a good AntiVirus but what is the most important against attacks is the user itself we are the ones responsible for downloading or opening dangerous files if your careful and don't open things you don't know who they are from your risks will decrease.

Also it is a good option to open your emails in a notepad form in case you have viruses attached to any of the images or other addons.

I used to use AVG until I started getting some weirdness. Then I went to Avast! for a while until I got tired of the whole gotta-register-your-FREE-program again thing and went to Avira Anti-Vir.

Comodo evidently has a combination firewall/anti-virus package that is supposed to be pretty good as well. If something starts going on with the Avira, then I'll go try that out instead.

I run both, NOD for myself, AVG for clients. AVG is slower than NOD.

I use to have AVG, but I didn't find it to be that great.

I use NOD32 now and it's great. Doesn't bog down the computer and the scan is a quick 15-20 minutes max.

I highly recomend AVG to my customers, I like the fact that you can go into the vault, and send any quarentined item to AVG for analysis. To me that is a big plus, of course that means the update database relies heavily on user input. All in all, I enjoy that it does not use very much system memory, and its scans can be made to be either quick and easy, or long and comprehenisve.
I have seen AVG pick up trojans that Norton's,
PC-Cillin, Panda, and others let slip by.

I was using avast and loved it, but I didn't like the fact that you couldn't schedule an automatic scan.
Switched to AVG and noticed that my PC ran slower, so I went to Avira which I had used a long while ago, and now my computer is as good and fast as it was before.

I have never had a problem with AVG slwoing down my comp, I still run the same speed as always, but then again, I have AVG set to run minimal when not activelly scanning.

I had to go small but quite powerful for my laptop. I agree with the above. I use NOD32 for my more powerful systems, but a 98 machine....well...you get the Idea. My Vista and XP machine both have NOD32...But AVG fits just right for the old 98...Even if I use it minimaly...

Avira IS an excellent antivirus, as is NOD32, however, I host server for online gaming, and both antivirus are pretty anal rententive in kicking out those who join, at least with AVG, I can let them into the server and unless they try anything with their packets, they don't get kicked. But then, one always needs an antivirus that is designed to suit ones needs.

due to this thread, I actually installed Avira, just to check it out and lo and behold, it did in fact find things that AVG had ignored for some time. Much faster and used less resources.

Will keep it for a while and see how I get used to it.

Thanks for info

I use ClamWin on my laptop and have never had any problems. Another plus is that it is open source.

I read and it seems that all of you only use one anti virus / spyware etc. What i have found out is that all anti viruses are different and using muiltipul anti viruses, spyware etc programs will be more effective. All anti virus programs are different and some find one thing but the other doesn't. Me personally i use 8 different programs and my computer is very clean. Just my oppion.
