May I ask, what moongoose and cobras have to do with gun control laws?

I cannot imagine anyone NOT wanting guns to be controlled in some form
or fashion. All's I know is *I* don't want "just anyone" having the
privilege of owning a firearm.huh

May I ask why you skipped all that relevant data and only attacked an
analogy?

Poet, I have followed all the opinions, data, throughout this thread,
and what started in an analogy, seemed to deteriorate into finer points
of the Discovery Channel..

It appears that this is becoming a , 'you say black, I will say white'
discussion, and that it is wandering way off topic...my observation, and
I asked a genuine question, as someone who is following this thread...

Interesting you use the word 'attack'...I don't see, hear, or feel an
attack in my question...and I am the one typing it, didn't feel like I
needed to 'attack'....

Perhaps your perspective of what is attack and what is a question, is
the one you need to ask yourself...

Attack, in a debate, means a counterpoint without validity or logical
backup.

Unless you mean to say you did not understand that the mongoose/cobra
thing was an analogy. In which case, I'm sorry, I thought you were being
ignorant for insult value. And not actually unaware of it.

For further reference- you can merely say "that's a tangent" and then
get back onto point.

But simply attacking/questioning/whatever the mongoose thing whist
skipping everything else is as much a meaningless tangent as the tangent
itself.

Which.... is a trap I'm falling into myself, discussing the finer
points of intellectual debate. We'll stop having this conversation in
public now, if you please.

It was not my intent, I was sincerely lost, and asked how a mongoose and
a cobra fit into context, and the police department thing, I have no
idea, I am not from America,...I asked a relevant question...we don't
have mongoose, nor cobras here...

Wow. I coulda swore you have a species of mongoose in australia. I'll
explain here just in case others need the lesson.

A mongoose is an omnivore, rodent-like species. It hunts snakes for
food. Amongst many other things. On occasion, it will fight cobras. In
part, because they feed on them. And in part because an unprotected
mongoose nest is.... well.... an easy meal.

Now, if a mongoose acted like most other rodentlike species- it would
get the cobra's attention, and then hope it chased the mother/father
instead of going for the babies. In most cases, they'll fail, and the
cobra (which can get very, very large) will help itself to a few, if not
all, of the young.

The mongoose is an exception. The mongoose *fights*. And wins, too. I'm
somewhat familiar with australian cattle dogs (Heelers). And their
fighting method against venomous snakes are very similar. In 20 fights,
there will be 19 dead cobras.

That's why the analogy fits so well. The species that fights back-
which is otherwise another unimpressive large rat- little different than
a mink, or (big) ferret- is the one that saves its babies the best. When
the prey fights back, and has a chance to win, it always results in a
win record for said prey.

As the mongoose faces the cobra, so can an armed civilian face a
criminal.

Good point jess. did get a bit off subject but as you can see by poets
explanation he and I were thinking the same thing. Nice respons poet.

the best defense against a predator is to stop the predator.

Thanks. The biology lesson notwithstanding, I rather thought the final
line was inspired.

And (to everyone else) Jess and I took care of the misunderstanding via
email, so it's all good.

I don't need a "bigger" gun. It only takes one bullet to kill someone.

What I want is more PEOPLE.

"Me vs. psycho"- let's just say 50/50 chance. Although I'm good with a
gun, so it may be higher in my favor, there's many other people who
won't be good. So whomever the "me" is could change and thus the odds
are never fixed.

Or "me, this other guy, that chick, and someone else vs. psycho"- which
gives one of us a guarenteed hit and kill. Hopefully, and probably,
before any of us die in the process.

to pull a trigger in an instantaneous, maybe reckless second might be
pretty easy for someone who is obviously scared about any current
situation that they may be facing. But it can also make a person freeze
in their tracks, and i mean dead stop.
I do not believe that guns should be rounded up by the thousands, i do
not believe that door to door confiscations are the answer, but trust me
when i say that there are a lot of you that i would not like to see a
gun in your hands. No one ever knows how they will react until the
moment is thrust upon them. definatley should be at least offered, asked
or directed to take some kind of classes.
Ive seen what guns can do, up close and personal, bith working on
someone and working to make someone no more, I can tell you from
experience that it is a life changing moment. whether it happens right
then or months later when you find your self not sleeping, it will
happen, you'll change.

lots more on this but not trying to preach

Oh, that it will change you, there's no doubt. But it sure beats the
change that will occure helplessly panicking whilst your friends are
slaughtered around you.
