I am going to try to get another laptop with my income tax return, and I was thinking of getting a mac this time. I know there are not as many games and other programs for it, but I am really tired of the virus problem, and I never know where they are coming from.
Can someone give me some advice?

hiya, I've used both a lot and i count a pc as better for the fun side of computing and macs for me are true work machines. try keeping yr pc for the net and a mac for buisiness. they are both just as prone to virus assult with the mac being a tad more difficult to clean up afterwards. if you've not used one before get ready, totally different beast.

They are coming from you yourself.

What I mean is that you or your kids are too gullible on the internet. You are clicking on things you should have not clicked on.

Secondly, the children games. A company that pays people to program children games, needs some kind of profit. Therefore, if infects all the free and demo games with malware. This results in pop-ups and general crazy activity of your computer.

What to do.

1. Do not trust anything on internet.
2. Purchase and install router (cheap).
3. Demand that your kids NEVER EVER click on any advertisement buttons that come with games, or lead to play online. Nothing is free, remember, and you will pay by being bugged to death.
4. If you can afford this, have separate computer for kids. Have "an image" made for you, so you can "reload" their computer anytime in 5 minutes.

Best of luck.

I also use both, but i started on a mac. Macs are definitely more expensive, although maintenance is much easier than a PC. Please consider buying the extended warranty fro Apple if you do decide to go for a mac, Repairs are expensive and turn around are usually fast. I am probably lucky because i never had a problem with apple support and turn around with my laptops are 3 to 5 days max. There are a lot of software that are available in this OS. Check out if a software is hybrid- meaning it will run in both PC and Mac. Popular tax software are exactly that- hybrids. As for virus, PC are definitely more prone but since Mac started using intel chips, thus making it run PC too, it is also becoming a target. Although i think i only dealt with viruses in a mac OS twice since i started using them in the early 80's. Hope this helps a little bit. Also, one plus is that with a mac, it is easier for the newbies and kids to navigate it.

Both have pluses and minuses.

Mac is a lot more proprietary and there are some power features you will not find on a Mac. PC have expandability Macs lack out of the crate. Macs also are not the most powerful machine on the block dollar for dollar. Macs are perfect for average users. Windows lends better to power users.
Macs are tailored for the average user. I build my own and know my way around Windows. I do have an Ubuntu machine as well.

I love my Mac (Powerbook G4) but the stupid thing breaks all the time. It's not under warranty any more. My Windows Vista machine has no problems at all. When you have hardware failure on a Mac it is much more expensive to fix.

There are pros and cons to each. If you want to just surf the net you should be fine with either choice but bear in mind that some web sites like my online banking site will only work with Internet Explorer. There was a version of IE for the Mac but it was in no way similar to the Windows version. You may have difficulty using some secure sites with Safari or Firefox. If you want to do video editing, music production or any other multimedia type of application go with a Mac as there is better support. If you want to play games then go with a Windows PC. Vista may get a bad rap but it's just as stable and easy to use as Leopard.

Do your research into the cost, support options and the software you want to use and make an informed decision.

There are plenty of viruses for Macs and plenty of antivirus software. The only reason there aren't more is because the market share is small. As the market share grows then so will the number of viruses. The pay off for a virus programmer just isn't that great for a Mac virus right now.
