Apparently common courtesy, respect & acceptance should be taught in school also, since some people never learn it anywhere else.

I learned that from my eldersdrinker

Lots of us did, it's usually where we do learn it and we carry it forward into adult life. What causes others to never learn it or if it was learned, don't care to honor those who taught it to them, I can't know. And none of those things make us bleeding hearts, it's part of what makes us caring human beings.

You are so right OMTA, and there is a big shortage of courtesy all around us

Well I have found in my line of work where it is necessary to check ones spelling and grammar, that there is always a nice way to encourage someone else kindly to double check these things.. You know there are just so many people that are nasty about so much why be a jerk over something as small as spelling and grammar.. Have you seen the learning statistics in this day and age anyway. Kids are being passed through grades just to get them out of school. Given a chance and somebody willing to take an interest they will flourish in so many areas..

If somebody needs correcting, I really couldn't give a damn if they like it or not. It's not my fault for somebody else's lack of learning something that should've been learned by age 7. There is no excuse or justification, and I refuse to be a bleeding heart.

If you don't like it, tough sh!t.

it is not your place to correct anyone

if you want to correct people

go get a job that gives you that authority

get some manners and mind your own business

Right...let's just accept everything so no one is ever offended...in fact, since children can't read until they are taught, maybe we shouldn't even teach them...just accept them like that. We could go on...let's accept criminals because they just have an easier time being a criminal than fitting into society. After all, we need to respect those people too.

that is totally ludicrous

what does lack of grammar do to hurt you

Jimmy, thanks for posting this thread. Of course, as usual, it has drawn out all the intellectual snobs who love to parade their intelligence. I'm pretty sure that's all they have going for them in their lives (the belief that they are intelligently superior....not the actuall intelligence itself) and that's why they are here.

Anyway, I don't even care if I get in trouble for posting this. The expressions of superiority and bashing of anyone who appears to be "less than" on this site make me sick. But, what comes around goes around.

I AM minding my own business. Perhaps you should, as well. A person's character has absolutely nothing to do with it. Somebody could be the nicest person in the world, but if their grasp of the written word and common English skills lacks, their credibility goes right down the toilet. I don't care how intelligent they may be otherwise in other areas.

Here's a better idea. Instead of making excuses all the time (either for yourself or on behalf of somebody else), why not do something to fix the problem instead of perpetuating it? The more people who "let it go", the greater the problem becomes.

The grasp of the written word--- Most people here have the grasp of it, even if it's misspelled, which ALL of us have done at one time or another.

An occasional typo isn't what I'm getting at. Everybody is human (at least, MOST of us are). I'm talking about the people who can neither use proper English skills as they should've been taught, nor do they care, or are even willing to do anything about it. I also have a problem with people who keep allowing it to happen.

You're right! I should learn to allow those who have nothing else going to have a place to express proper grammar and spelling!

The original OP's most was also to try to stop allowing something to happen that is just as WRONG as misspelling!!

Some of us were not born English and think in a different language so it may sometimes come across strange to people but as for myself (French) I have all the respect in the world for people who try their best at writing where I have a problem is for the ones that know how to write but are to lazy to do so and use all those short expressions do that in your text message where space is restricted not here where you have all the space you need it might take a few second more but at least it's comprehensible.

Everybody miss spells words sometimes. Some people type to fast or think to fast for their own good.

I garuntee everyone in here is double checking their spelling and grammer while posting in this thread just because of what it is about.

But I would be will to bet that everyone of us, on any other thread, dont look so hard and have our own mistakes.

And I think there is fine line as well. Its when people start short cutting words that might make them look less uneducated. But then again...I'm not one to judge because I am guilty of doing it as well.

obviously where grammar critics are concerned we do not conform

and it irritates them

and maybe irritating them is the plan to begin with

and they are letting us control that lil part in them that makes this an issue
