I'm going to say two things here, and it may seem that the two are completely contradictory; but, in fact, it will only seem that way because they are.

1. Some of my friends here -- actual people on my friends list, even -- have met "The One" here. It happens. I have no reason to doubt them. They have no reason to lie to me, as far as I know. There's no prize for fooling people into believing that you met someone if you actually didn't -- no one has mentioned that, anyway. I didn't get a memo.

I think, in an environment where there are many, many people who enjoy these forums, and who post here regularly, it's probably inevitable that some of those people are going to find that they mesh well with certain other people, and then that can grow and develop into something more serious and meaningful.

In a better world, it would happen more often. That it doesn't, I attribute to the frivolous and hedonistic attitudes of so many of the alleged participants, myself included, since some people are simply going to be more serious than others.

2. The lucky few who have actually found their "The One" here excluded, I agree totally with your premise that there is a lot of pretense and facadism going on.
