I wouldn't suspect that either, would you?
If it had been the other way round, and she had been Christian and rejected, I swear, there would be loads of posts out there already, in politics and in the general religion.

Well except that no one ever rejects Christians that Im aware of? That would be akin to rejecting someone because they are Caucasian. I guess it could happen but its not as likely to occur because Christians make up a substantial portion of the macro culture in the United States. So their religion is considered the normal course or the "standard."

It seems that the likelihood of a group of Wiccans organizing a beauty pageant and then discriminating against Christian contestants is far less likely to occur.

9 Steps to becoming a witch by Kim Brown

STEP ONE - discovering your path
Read and study. Read everything you can get your hands on. You need to read anything that will tell you more about the beliefs of witchcraft, magazines, books and web pages. While studying there are other forms of the craft that help. (nature) For example you could go hiking or go camping. Sunbathe, moonbathe, watch animals etc.

STEP TWO - defining your path
In a notebook, folder or journal start writing down some reasons why the craft is for you. What does being a witch mean to you? What do you hope to achieve? How do you visualize the God and Goddess? What does the Divine mean to you? Be honest. This notebook will become your book of shadows.

STEP THREE - Exploring magic
Magic is simply raising and channeling energy that is found in yourself, nature and the divine. Before you begin working with magic you need to understand what it is. You also need to know the basic structure of a ritual, casting circles, calling quarters, invoking the God/dess, raising and directing energy, grounding and centering and closing the circle. Know the moon phases. Learn to feel how the moon effects your body. Keep records of all you have learned in your book of shadows.

STEP FOUR - learning to focus
Now you should start working on meditation and visualization exercises to increase your concentration. Learn to be calm. You can start out by meditating at least 3 times a week for about five minutes. You should do this for at least a month. Remember to keep a record in your book of shadows.

STEP FIVE - working with magic
Now you can begin some basic spell work. Start with a full moon ritual or a new moon ritual.

STEP SIX - self dedication
After you have been studying for at least five or six months on meditating and working with magic it is time to perform a self dedication ritual. Design it however you want. A self dedication ritual means you are dedicating yourself to the craft.

STEP SEVEN - the year between dedication and initiation
You can initiate yourself when you feel you are ready. The year you spend between your self dedication and your initiation you should spend celebrating the Sabbats, meditation, practicing your spellwork and studying. Use this time to learn about different forms of divination, such as Tarot or Runes, and different forms of healing, such as herbalism. Make sure you are recording in your book of shadows.

STEP EIGHT - Networking
You should spend a solitary year study after self dedication before a witch considers joining a coven or a circle. This gives you a full year to celebrate the cycle of Sabbats.

STEP NINE - Initiation
An initiation should be something that’s meaningful to you. The ritual should be written only by you. A coven initiation is a means of bonding a group together. Initiation into the craft should always be a solitary ritual.
You still have to learn and practice. If you truly want to be a witch be prepared to spend the rest of your life studying and learning about this religion.

Kim Brown is a hereditary witch and writes books and teaches classes on witchcraft.

Thanks for posting these steps Ruth. I feel that many of them are right for me. However some parts I feel differently about. In fact, I'm going to take these 9 steps and re-write them to fit my own personal path. And then put the results in my Book of Shadows. laugh

I would also like to mention something about the "Book of Shadows". I guess everyone views this differently, and it is for this reason that I would like to share my view for whatever it's worth.

From my perspective there are TWO BOOKS that a witch should keep. One of them is the Book of Shadows, and the other one is their Personal Journal.

I personally feel that it's important to keep these separate, and the reason I feel that this is important is because I see them as having two entirely different purposes.

I see the Book of Shadows as being the framework of how you personally view or 'formalize' your version of Wicca, or Witchcraft.

It is your 'doctrine' of sorts. Your structure.

From what I've read, the Book of Shadows should contain things like the following:

1. Your own personal decree of what whichcraft means to you.

2. Your own personal decree of moral values as you feel it relates to witchcraft.

From there on out it may contain things like the following:

3. Songs of praise that you have written for the Goddess, the God, and any other spirits you view as important guides in your life.

4. A description of how you perform rituals, specifically circle casting rituals, but also any other rituals that you may perform.

5. Chants, incantations, spells, and any other magick rituals you may perform.

6. It should also contain information about what kinds of magick tools, amulates, herbs, potions, ect, that you may use in your magickal journey.

In short, your Book of Shadows should be something that you can pass on to other witches or newcomers to be used as food for thought and ideas of how to proceed.

However, your Book of Shadows should not contain your own personal experiences, like dreams, visions, meditation experiences, etc.

All of that personal information should be kept in a seperate journal. That journal is private and only has meaning to you. Other people may find it interesting if you share it with them, but it's not meant to be a foundation in general. It's a record of you own personal journey.

If you put the two books into one, then your Book of Shadows is lost because it has become intertwined with your own personal journey and experience.

Of course this is my own personal view, based on what I've read about a Book of Shadows and a Personal Journal.

So this is the way that I'm starting off. When my Book of Shadows is complete for 2009 it can be passed on to others, or published and sold. It will indeed be my own version of witchcraft. But it won't contain my personal journey. That information will be contained in my Personal Journal which is seperate from the Book of Shadows.

The Personal Journal is more like a personal diary that should be written in every day.

The Book of Shadows is more like a doctrine, or decree of how you have structured your belief system, your rituals, spells, tools and how you view your deities.

So I would recommend starting both a Book of Shadows, and a Personal Journal. And keeping them seperate.

The Book of Shadows being something that you can share with other witches and pass on as your legacy. It should also be much more structured. In fact, some people have suggested treating it like a work of art. Take the time to rewrite things carefully and then place them into the Book of Shadows with great care and organization. Even including artwork if it suits you.

The Personal Journal is more like a private diary. No structure required. Just jot down whatever you are feeling. This is for your own reference.

Anyway, that's just my thoughts for whatever they are worth. bigsmile

I'm sure everyone does it differently. flowerforyou

James, I totally agree with you on this. If I write a Book of Shadows it should be something I could pass down to my children to teach them the "how to" part of my witchcraft.

How to cast a circle
How to do spells
How to.....etc.

It would be an instructional manual. And, something I really should start putting together for them. My ex called me a couple of weeks ago to tell me that my girls had used all his salt "doing spells". (They are 5 and 6 years old). laugh

They are little Witches! Thats cute. I found a quote last night.

"If you take [a copy of] the Christian Bible and put it out in the wind and the rain, soon the paper on which the words are printed will disintegrate and the words will be gone. Our bible IS the wind and the rain."

Herbalist Carol McGrath as told to her by a Native-American woman.
