AP: Obama aunt from Kenya living in US illegally

WASHINGTON (AP) - Barack Obama's aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.

Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcment official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.

Onyango's refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, non-criminal violation of U.S. immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the United States.

The AP could not reach Onyango immediately for comment. No one answered the telephone number listed in her name late Friday. It was unclear why her request for asylum was rejected in 2004.

Onyango is not a relative whom Obama has discussed in campaign appearances and, unlike Obama's father and grandmother, is not someone who has been part of the public discussion about his personal life.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Kelly Nantel, said the government does not comment on an individual's citizenship status or immigration case.

Onyango's case—coming to light just days before the presidential election—led to an unusual nationwide directive within Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requiring any deportations prior to Tuesday's election to be approved at least at the level of ICE regional directors, the U.S. law enforcement official told the AP.

The unusual directive suggests that the Bush administration is sensitive to the political implications of Onyango's case coming to light so close to the election.

Kenya is in eastern Africa between Somalia and Tanzania. The country has been fractured in violence in recent years, including a period of two months of bloodshed after December 2007 that killed 1,500 people.

The disclosure about Onyango came just one day after Obama's presidential campaign confirmed to the Times of London that Onyango, who has lived quietly in public housing in South Boston for five years, was Obama's half aunt on his father's side.

It was not immediately clear how Onyango might have qualified for public housing with a standing deportation order.

Is it just me or do others out here feel that the polls are fixed and wrong?

They have spoke to the fact that THIS is a record turn out for NEW voter's and for early voters turning out to vote.

NOW, I feel they (new voters) want to cast their votes for Obama
and many,many, African Americans turning out for him to.

BUT, here's the problem, if THATS the case then Obama should be leading in ALL the polls GREATLY as the McCain fans would not be THE REASON for all the new voters, and HIS FANS would not be so rallied,,,right?

But nobody talks of this on any radio programs or TV news I have heard.

Half aunt? How can you half a half aunt. Can have a half-sibling, because of one shared parent.


Do you also think that parents of children who break laws should be held as criminally responsible for the crimes as the child who commited the crime?

This story doesn't make sense. How is she living in public housing if she has been without immigration status for four years? She wouldn't be able to qualify to continue living there. It seems to me more likely that she's appealing or something like that. Think about it: the SOURCE of the story is a law enforcement official. If they know she is there, and they know she doesn't have papers, then how on earth is she still there?



I don't think that's a good comparison. Maybe switch the parent and child role and you have something, although still kind of weak. Parents whose minor children commit crimes should be held responsible to some extent...but Barack Obama was not responsible for raising his (half??) aunt from birth and keeping an eye on her.

Not that I think his aunt has done some terrible terrible thing, but then again, I am an evil open borders pinko commie.

Well she lived in Boston and was here legally as she qualified for housing in 2003 but in 2004 her visa ran out but the feds failed to tell the Boston Housing Authority.now she is gone.
I could see this having signifigance if he was head of immigration or the woman killed ten people but to pick one obscure relative that Obama had no idea of is ludicrous.

So??? I am the family law breaker in my emmediate family. They had no control over that.

It's the truth!!

I've been hearing about the voting machines not working. When people are voting a straight Democrat ticket, it's coming out Republican. It's important now to look at what it says after you vote.

This story is another attempt by hateful right-wingers to smear a good man! Look forward to more such cowardly attacks on President Obama's character. Remember not to believe everything you read! Let his actions as President color your opinion of him and his administration. My guess is you'll see grace, honesty, and dignity restored to this office that had been sorely lacking in the last eight years.
