And I suppose you are the foremost activist for health care reform and population control.

Ive had to do it with a parent...I'll never make my child do it for me.

Thats why I have a DNR in my living will

flowerforyou Sorry to hear that. It makes you grow up real fast eh?

I had to do this for my Mother, and my Father decided to stop all treatments last month...he's been given maybe until Christmas. They both had cancer, & were both in massive pain. I dream about it sometimes; hard hard hard choices, but I know what I did/am doing is the RIGHT thing, albeit the most damaging to myself. brokenheart "The quality of mercy is not strain'd, It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes."

If you want to keep the burden off your family members you need to go to your doctor's office or a hospital and complete a POLST form.

This form allows you to decide your future should you ever be in a position of needing CPR/life support. You can say NO CPR, no life support, etc., and a copy of it is scanned into your medical record. They give you the original to take home and put on your refrigerator should you collapse at home. The ambulance crews have been trained to look on your refrigerator in the case of an emergency for this form.

People of legal age are allowed to complete this form.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice did not know that.

I have informed my family that I do not want to be kept alive on life support if there is no hope. And being Brain dead to me is no hope!! I don't want to live if I can not take care of myself. And as well they know that I want to be cremated as well.

hope I am never in that position..have a living will that says do not resesitate...don't ever want to be the person who has to make the decision for anyone else either

I feel the same, yet if it came down to it and I was forced into that position and they had no living will, I think I would not hesitate to terminate life support. I would be afraid they would linger like that indefinitely and then I would feel responsible. I guess partly it lies in how you look at it. Either you are relieving human discomfort or causing it. I believe you are just hastening the natural process that would occur on its own if the person were not hooked to machines that were allowing them to continue to take breaths.

Nice to see some eye opening views on this, so far I'm liking the responses. I'm going to be filling out my Power of Attorney soon, as well as the POLST form. I prefer not to be on life support, not very fun while your family hangs in the limbo of what to do.

Catestrophic medical debt is still the leading cause of bankruptcy. I can not tell you the number of families I have delt with over the years that are homeless because they tried to maintain a life a few weeks or months longer where the patient was either unaware or in great pain. It is nearly impossible for parents and since many catestrophic trauma's are car crashes that include spouses it is so important to let them know what your wishes are. Doctor's, nurses, and even facilities will often not tell you that there are ways that life supports can be withdrawn without inflicting pain or suffering.

Please rapunzel, let down your hair so that we may all climb up and meet the super genius and genetically perfect specimen that is you. Your actual concern overwhelms the mind, and your artistry with shown smiley faces rivals that of Leonardo di Vinci while they support the rock solid wisdoms that shall undoubtedly transcend the generations to come. The semantics that you've unraveled and put to undeniable logic deserves everyone's unconditional admiration.
