It is funny to hear the critiques older people have about the materialism many younger people worship, but where or who did they get it from? Thought this might be a welcome break from the back bitting of yesterday.

Materialism and greed are two different thinks. Materialism is a philosophy that states that the only thing that can truly be proven to exist is matter.

Maybe you are talking about materialistic, yet even that is different from greed because materialistic's just hold possessions in higher regards that spiritual, intellectual, or cultural values. Maybe they really love their car or their house, but it doesnt mean they are not content with what they have.

My parents weren't materialistic.
I have never been materialistic.
Not sure what happened to the kids today.

Good question.

I think tv has played a role. It's a disposable, get the next thing, up-grade must have now it society. It hasn't done us or the environment much good.

Why is the title of this post "why do Americans applaud greed?"...? Where did that come from? You're not talking about Americans per se in your post, but just "young versus old".

Humans in general are greedy. Societies that are based on equal distribution only last as long as the charasmatic figures that establish them. Once those guys die, everyone goes back to being greedy. yours in Chaos, Scarlett

it happened when the hippies turned into yuppies...the movie "Wall Street" epitomized the American mind-set...."greed is good."

the Greatest Generation catered to the Baby Boomers and the biggest consumer demographic established the biggest run up in productivity and demand for goods and services oin history.

Competition for those Dollars being spent created a frenzy of psychotic, obsessive and compulsive proportions to lure the consumer to open the wallet and bleed money.

The lust for money to satiate the lust for trinkets led to success being measured by quantity and quality of possessions and instruments of material wealth and the abandonment of intrinsic values and morality as a gauge of success.

Avarice and greed is a lust insatiably fed by addictive obsessions compulsively.

Sounds like a dysfunctional mental health issue to me.

I also think it is the natural conclusion of capitalism. Then has a time when a washer and a dryer was living large. Now it is as though everyone is trying to filled every nook and cranny of the homes with sh*t, that they barely ever use. Are we so spiritually bankrupt that we don't even eye this excess is choking us as we fall deeper in debt.

This is an example, I have to drive 25 miles to get my shoes repaired. Many of us know that there was a time when one of the first businesses in a town was a shoe repair store. They have disappeared because everyone is now buying 19 pairs of shoes from china that they throw away after one season.

Thats because the market has changed. It is pretty much cheaper to buy new shoes than to get them repaired. Back then shoes were not mass produced.

As far as spirituality goes, you need to be more accepting, not everyone is spiritual. I like how everyone just ignored my other posts.

Just because you want nice things doesnt make you greedy. I want nice things, so I save for what I want. Does that make me a bad person? I have wanted a really nice HD tv for years. Guess what, I dont have one yet. You know why? Because I haven't saved enough for the one I want and I am not gonna waste money on one that isnt everything I want it to be.

The younger people learned a lot from the oldsters about greed and materialism.

Those who are smart reject those tenets.

Where do you think the term 'yuppie scum' came from?

Greed and materialism are nothing new, but if they make you happy, go for it.

I find happiness in other sources.

What?! I missed backbiting?! laugh

I've been to busy trying to keep up with the Joneses.

whoa

materialism. we all have material needs. food, clothing,
medicine, and shelter. some feel like they need other
fancier things but they don't really.

and as very many unhappy rich people will tell you,
there is more to life. friendship and love. family and
children. relationships. affection. things which are
inherently not salable.

no point to debate it.

laugh but that never stopped them from trying
