Last week I had a computer test. And one of the questions I did not understand how he wanted us to do it. So I did it the way I thought he wanted it done and continued on with the rest of the test. I figured that I would just ask him afterwords before handing it in. Which I did I asked him if that was the right way and explained what I did. I KNEW answers. Just did not understand how he wanted it done. I get it back today and they were all wrong after I had asked him if this how he wanted it done. I question him about it and he told me that he did not understand the question. WTF if you did not understand the question why would you not say so instead of me losing 6 marks?

I mean really is that fair?
maybe you should be teaching him.!!!!grumble flowerforyou

Many things in life require the ability to follow instructions. No one is there to hold your hand and tell you how to do everything. If you can't figure out how to read instructions, you will never learn how to do anything. Is that fair? Maybe not, but it is the way life is. You have to be able to figure things out on your own in order to succeed.

Were you not allowed to ask prior?

I would not let it go that the teacher has the final say... As Lily mentioned some one else is always running the school, etc. It's just like in business if you're not getting what you need to satisfy what is right/proper/correct (pick term), then you ask for a higher up.

If you asked the teacher if it was right before you handed in the paper and he said "yes" then there is latitude to get a re-take or compromise on the grade.. If the answers are right and the knowledge is there and just the format is wrong then I don't see how it can be ignored.

Just out of curiousity are you not allowed to clarify expectations before or during a test if you find you're not understanding something?

Sorry you had a bad experience taking the test. It really makes the case for doing your homework when selecting classes and instructors where a Grade Point Average can be very important to getting the next class, scholarships, and even jobs. The process to appeal a grade is arduous but it can be done. I would discuss it first with your student advisor so that you can have all the pro's and con's. The school environment is a very small community and it may or may not be worth the fall out to contest the one grade in the course. I don't think the gradeing system is often very fair. Often explanations are vague or in error. Test taking classes are offered and can actually improve your grade and entire letter grade so I recommend them to students.

Every teacher is different....I bend over backwards for my students....I'm more concerned in knowing if they actually learned what's been taught then whether or not they can negotiate a tricky test. Some teachers are just busters. If you feel strongly, then go to the department chair. It never hurts to advocate for yourself....worst case, you keep the grade you have now.
