So far Jefferson Parish is preparing in the Greater New Orleans area and watching to start the ball rolling on getting people out as early as possible. I am hoping it stays at a category 1 or go down to a tropical storm. I have had enough damage to body and property from Katrina.

Good to know, and sorry to hear about the effects of Katrina on you, personally! I really do hope he heads to a relatively uninhabited area.

ughh i lived in fl for 3 years, 2 months after moving there i got hit with charlie, then frances, and then umm i forgot the next one, no major damage in those, but i had moved ot s fl for grad school by the time wilma came through and it took all the shingles and the siding off the back of the house, my room was a mess and i even had leaking downstairs, between that and having my daughter, not being able to back to grad school and wanting more family around, i gave up on fl and came back to ny

Oh hon, I understand! I've lived in Florida all my life, so hurricanes are nothing new to me. But yeah, when Charley, Frances, and Ivan all rumbled through.... I can see how that would be a shock to a newcomer! I hope everything personal to you was saved, and you yourself suffered no injury at all. At least come back to visit Florida, even if you have to do it before April 1st and after Nov 1st. =)

Taking no chances, city officials began preliminary planning to evacuate and lock down the city of New Orleans in hopes of avoiding the catastrophe that followed the 2005 storm. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin left the Democratic National Convention in Denver to return home for the preparations. Gov. Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency to lay the groundwork for federal assistance, and put 3,000 National Guard troops on standby.

Forecasters said Wednesday Gustav could strengthen to a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 111 mph or higher in the next several days before hitting somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and Texas.

If a Category 3 or stronger hurricane comes within 60 hours of the city, New Orleans plans to institute a mandatory evacuation order. Unlike Katrina, there will be no massive shelter at the Superdome, a plan designed to encourage residents to leave. Instead, the state has arranged for buses and trains to take people to safety.

As of 11:00 PM, Gustav was centered 17.8 North Latitude, and 77.3 West Longitude, 35 miles west-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica. 275 miles east-southeast of Grand Cayman.

Hurricane Warning in effect for Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

Obviously still no definitive idea of the track of Gustav. However, all indications are it will be in the Gulf of Mexico by late Saturday. Sunday and Monday are suddenly looking like possible days it will hit land somewhere on the US southern Gulf Coast.

The damage was limited in the Cayman Islands, and NO reports of injuries! That's all thanks to the great preparedness of the people there. Nice to see!

Gustav has swelled to a Category 3 hurricane, and it's 225 miles west southwest of Cuba, moving northwest at 12 MPH.

Right now, the National Hurricane Center in Miami is saying there's a 50% chance Gustav hits mainland Louisiana. President Bush declared a Federal Emergency in Louisiana, paving the way for federal aid and assistance in case evacuations need to occur.

I used to live in Pensacola, so I can imagine (after Ivan) that people their are gonna leave now. Some will ride it out. Even if the eye hits New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile and Pensacola will still feel the effects. I'll be contacting my peeps their to see what is all going on.

Hurricane Faye brought tornados right overtop of me while Peccy was down...luckily they didn't touch down. But, 911 did call us and warn us it was over us.

The last tornado here was an F4 and hit a house 3 doors down from me and wreaked havoc for miles on two parralel roads and killed one woman by putting a 2 X 4 thorugh her chest.

And an F 15/or 14? crash landed about a half mile down road from me....

I guess it's the halo:angel:

Wow, how did you live in Florida for 33 years and never go through a hurricane?? We get the effects of at least one a year... (Last year was fairly quiet.)

Fay dumped a lot of rain on me, but yeah, often times when those hurricanes hit land, the biggest threat are the tornadoes that form.

Glad you're okay Lilangel! Hopefully your family and friends are alright, Goofball!

This is scary stuff. I just moved here from the Northeast. What was I thinking?

I hope everyone stays safe and this whole thing weakens before landfall.

it is intensifying...the eyewall should reform strongly
in the next few hours. when we get the next good low
pressure reading in the eye we'll know what kind of beast
we've got. it looks to be quite wild.

a hit just west of new orleans would be the worst.
at least there's partial cancellation of the GOP convention.

why don't they just declare him the nominee by acclamation
in about 5 minutes, let him speak, and then help out?

i will admit to a fascination with hurricanes
and volcanoes. they are superhuman and make me feel
very small. supernatural even - WoW.
