The storm surge is expected of 10-14 feet above normal tidal levels near the center of Gustav when it crosses land.

Oooohhhh don't worry, sweets! Florida is only getting rain bands from Gustav. The hurricane itself is heading directly for Louisiana, about 400 miles or so from the Gulf Coast of Florida. Depending on where in Florida, that is. I think he's just fine! =)

A Category 3 Hurricane Gustav is nearing the southern coast of Louisiana Sunday night as it was expected to hit Monday morning, according to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center.

At 10 p.m., the storm's center was about 220 miles southeast of New Orleans and moving about 16 mph northwest, according to the hurricane center update.

Gustav's hurricane force winds extend up to 70 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend up to 220 miles, according to the update.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the Gulf Coast from High Island to the Alabama-Florida border, according to the center's update.

Sometimes Google takes the, well, not "fun", but, um, challenge, out of keeping informed...lol

I make do with my marine RF, SENTACAL receiver, and good old fashioned plotting charts. =)

To avoid the storm, Carnival Cruise Lines diverted one of its ships today to a Mexican port instead of Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Yea the combination of all the info at our finger tips is pretty cool these days

As of 11:00PM EST, 9/1/08

All coastal warnings have been discontinued.

The center of now Tropical Storm Gustav is at 31.1 North Latitude, and 92.7 West Longitude, about 20 miles southwest of Alexandria, Louisiana. Gustav is moving northwest near 13MPH. Maximum sustained winds are near 60 MPH, and it's expected to become a tropical depression early Tuesday.
