Topic: How are you? | |
---|---|
When someone asks "How are you?" I often do not know how to respond. I know many people say this in greeting and I never know if they actually expect an answer.
I know it sounds stupid but I find myself not knowing what to say in most social situations and even online lately. When a stranger or even an acquatence ask's how are you in greeting what is the proper way to respond? |

sad to say but most people dont wait for a reply anyway, but if it's a friend that cares and is asking you how you're doing, I'd respond w/honesty. If it's a social setting, I'd respond Fine and yourself.

Simple and easy to just answer good, depending on the relation to the person you can get more in depth with the answer...such as, I'm not doing so well and going into an explanation of why or I'm great because _______ (fill in the blank). |

If a friend is asking, I'll tell them the truth. If it's someone random, I'll usually say "fine thanks and you?"

Funny you should ask. When I moved to Texas, that was the greeting everywhere I went, and I thought it was odd. In New Jersey, where I was from, that was considered a kind of personal question.
I realized here they say it like they would say "Good Morning" or "Hi"!! In New Jersey, they didn't ask unless they really wanted to know. If you told someone REALLY how you were here, they'd look at you funny and try to change the subject!!! |

My step-Dad asks me every day when he comes in from work and it makes me totally uncomfortable I usually just smile and leave the room . I think i'll start using a standard great, thanks ....I really don't want to ask how someone else is because I don't want to get a conversation started .
Thank you all for the information and advice. |

Maybe your step-Dad really cares about how you are doing. It would hurt my feelings if I asked someone that and they left the room without answering. |
