Is Religion Real or was it invented by government to keep people in line or is it actual facts of God reaching out to us?

How do you feel about this issue? Here are some choices. Feel free to add remarks or even other choices if you have them.

I think it was government to keep people in line.(bascially laws.)

I was born in, so I believe.

It is just to make others feel safe.

It was invented by man to stop all the confusion and questions.

I don't believe in that CRAP!

It was made to make people not be afraid of dying.

If there was a GOD why does all kinds of crap happen Randomly..

I believe in what the Bible says.

I believe in what the Torah says.

I believe in what the Koran says.

I believe in (choose your religion or belief) says.

I believe aliens created us.

Most religions, in my humble opinion, were created with the purpose of explaining things we did not understand. We didn't do it, can't do it or can't imagine how it can occur, so we attributed these things to a deity, because it is all the mind could phathom.

Religion also surved the purpose of helping keep a society together and strong. In ancient times most cultures were only seperated by their religions, and the gods they worshiped.

Religion also kept the masses healthy. Why don't people of jewish and muslim faith eat pork? Because when the laws of "unclean" were written a pork chop could kill you. Meats weren't thoroughly prepared and thus were poisonous. Tomatoes were considered "the fruit of the devil" for a while. Everyone cooked in lead pots, the tomatoes acids would disolve a small amount of the layer when cooked which led to lead poisoning.

There are countless reasons why religion was created, and I'm sure part of it had to do with people in power wanting to stay in power, but I don't see any government conspiracy there. Religon was around before most of these governments. You could argue that governments are a conspiracy of the church...

Yes very true and it is probably unfair of me to ask this question for in reality it could use up a whole book of answers. Nevertheless, I find it entertaining to see what people believe and why they believe in them.

Thank you again for your great answers.

Religion is like vodka ...

If you have too much it will kill you.

You become boring, a pain in the arse and annoying to be around a long time before that, however.

In limited amounts it makes people party, (which I suppose,) is ok, although it makes some people nasty, even in small amounts.
Me? It sends me to sleep.

Some claim it makes them healthier ... I wonder if a quiet coffee would do the same thing?

If you like its mind-numbing properties, and you can handle how much of a pariah it will make you, go for it.
But dont be telling me how wonderful it is, as I won't be joining you, and I'd rather not have to say so twice.

Really, drink it all up.
It will be nice to have you around until you get annoying and mouthing off.
Just remember, if you turn into a gob-sh1te arsehole or start a fight, the vodka nor the religion is an excuse.

Finally, when you find it's ruining your life, and can't quit by yourself, I'm always here to help.

Ignoring the fact that question was both loaded and biased (apo the direct reference to a specific deity and religion)

Any belief that religion came from government largely ignores sociology, and history. Religion has been around since as long as man could communicate their opinions about the "Shadows on the cave wall".

If your life requires that you live a nomadic style, you can get pretty selfish, stingy and crafty when it come to keeping what's yours. Property was wealth, what was property; flocks/herds/material to be sold, and family. Keeping animals was a matter of keeping a FULL family able and willing to work together. Keeping the family together - what better way than to create a religious dogma.

A great and large family is the envey of other nomadics, until they trade their women for the 'secrets' of that success. Soon every tribe becomes religious.

As the world moves on and civilization creates a softer life, the tribes beliefs come together, no longer something made up by the head of the tribe, it has passed through generations until it has become 'truth'. This truth, in a civilized society, becomes a way to KEEP the 'tribe' mentality, to maintain cultural integrity and soon the religions of a tribe becomes the law of a social culture.

It was not government, originally, it was a family that required all it's members to stay together. Consider the earliest of the hebrew scriptures, they are the laws that bind a family. The morals that keep peace within the large family units, necessary to the nomadic tribes. The mistake was that the head of those family neglected to let the following head of house in on the secret.

Just like psychologists today try to understand and prompt the best possible parenting skills, those ancients were only trying to raise and keep their families structured, safe, protected and together. A little bit of this mythology, a little bit of that - they were nomadic so myths tended to be passed around.

When they finall came together in a city/society they were so similar that they banded together, and so began the political prowess of governing masses of people.

Religion has been found to exist as far back as humans existed. It was practiced by cultures in one form or another even when these societies had no knowledge of the existence of other people on other continents.
When the Europeans had yet to discover the Americas there was religion here. Both in North and South American cultures. Therefore it can not be an institution created for gov control. This is a ridiculous notion and not very mature or informed!

Religion exists because their is an embedded knowledge in mans brain. I believe it was placed there when God created man. When the continents drifted apart this knowledge took on its own life in many forms. Drifting like the continents but still ingrained in the DNA of all humans.
That is why God chose to make himself known to the Jews and why he sent Jesus to walk the earth. He did so to remind them so that they could spread the only true version of religion to all his people!
