I see the monarchy all around the world with absolutely no exception at all as undemocratic ,unfair ,unequal ,and above the laws of the lands . It is an old institution that does not make any sense as we speak in 2008 .

Coming from a country that can trace it monarchy back 2000 years, its nice to see the history.
But it is a bit of an outdated institution. the Royalists amongst the UK say that they are useful and tradition needs them, the republicans say that they are a burden to the treasury. I cant see any point in abolishing the monarchy, but I do think they are financially draining the already overburdened British public's taxes. The Crown is a business, and as such should be treated like one. They should pay taxes and levies like the rest of us. The Crown makes the Queen the 3rd richest person in the world. But it doesnt help the lowly serfs, like myself!! Good job I left the UK really! |

I havent researched most current data, but I was under the impression the British monarchy attracts more revenues in tourism than would be attracted without them. I was also of the impression the Queen has her own personal wealth. The Crown and what comes with it does not really belong to them, to do with as they wish. Prince Charles has his own income (Duchy of Cornwall). I believe they are cheaper than the cost of keeping a President. Yes, I also appreciate the history, I guess it is inevitable when one has been raised on it. I do not think any man - made institution is going to be without some flaws. |

You are right on those things. But there is also the Civil List. This is an amount of tax-free money that each member of the Royal family gets from the Treasury just for being. The Queen herself has a personal wealth, but she presides over the wealth of the Crown (i.e. If Charles took over as King, he would preside over the wealth of the Crown as the ruler of the United Kingdom of Great Britain) Charles' wealth is based on his Duchy incomes. This is a landlord based collection system whereby he "owns" the land and receives rent from it. The Duke of Westminster (the Queen's cousin) is the UK largest individual landowner. However the land that the Crown owns is only slightly more than the Anglican church. (Who, by the way, lost £800million on purchasing a land deal, and still made a £1billion profit at the end of the year!) |

I am aware of the civil list and also that most of the Royal's have their own finances and work. Still cheaper than keeping a President and all it entails. I am not sure if you meant the land deal was the Crown or the church. I think perhaps the Crown. As that belongs to the country and if that keeps the land from being chewed up by greedy developers I am thinking it might be a good thing for the present time anyway. I am also very aware that the Monarch is the Head of the Church. So I question the motives of those who want to remove them. |
