Where do amoebas fit into that?

They most certainly perceive, but are not aware. huh

What makes you think they are not aware? Of course they are aware.

To perceive, the perceiver must be consciously sensing?

I find so much trouble equating this to the obvious.

To the obvious? What are you referring to as the obvious?

What then is the difference between awareness and self-awareness?

Awareness is the ability to perceive.

Self awareness is being aware that you are aware and that you have the ability to perceive.

My question...

Where do amoebas fit into that? They most certainly perceive, but are not aware.

Your response...

What makes you think they are not aware? Of course they are aware.

Ok then...

That respectfully wraps this up from my end.

Be well JB... truly...

Hardly. You did not answer my question.

What makes you think they are not aware?

I think they are aware because the have the ability to sense vibrations. They could not sense vibrations if they were not aware.

You are confused, and you and JB have it all backwards...

I thought you were onto something and I was excited about it. My apologies if there’s been any emotional damage in the mix. I never meant for that to happen. From my point of view it was just a logical topic that I was truly interested in. Clearly there was a miscommunication concerning your original assertion. That’s a bit sad. Because had your original assertion held (as I had originally understood it), that would have been truly exciting. Unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be the case now. So everythings back to being a regular mundane world again I guess.

Well I can't seem to get a strait answer out of you, Creative, no matter how simple I pose the question. You continue to play games.... Bait and trap? laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

I have asked you very direct questions and you do not answer. I have answered your questions as simply and basically as possible and you do not respond coherently or else you do not understand my answers. For you, our discussions are nothing more that a competition and your only goal is to appear to win. I think that's a little odd. huh noway

Awareness

...having knowledge of something. Aware implies vigilance in observing or alertness in drawing inferences from what one experiences...

flowerforyou

Perception

the result of perceiving...

perceiving

1 a: to attain awareness or understanding of b: to regard as being such <perceived threats> <was perceived as a loser>
2: to become aware of through the senses; especially

I guess it could go either way according to Webster...

flowerforyou

No winners. No losers. We just are.

"vigilance in observing"

means the same thing as :

"the ability to perceive.
PERCEIVE: To sense or feel vibrations.

(observation does not have to be by way of sight, but even sight is the sensing of vibrations.)

"alertness in drawing inferences from what one experiences"

means the same thing as what I said....

"sensing and interpreting vibrations."

alertness = sensing
drawing inferences = interpreting
experiences = perception

JB

Your definition is basically saying the same thing as mine only I have reduced reality to vibrations.

vigilance...

the quality or state of being vigilant.

vigilant...

alertly watchful especially to avoid danger

Things perceive stimulus and instinctively react accordingly without awareness.

I’m still at a loss then why you don’t allow that computers can perceive without being aware?

What are you demanding about perception that computers aren’t qualifying for here?

That’s where I’m lost.

You keep giving definitions for perception that appear to me to easily be applicable to robotic situations, yet you refuse to allow that computers can apply.

But in all honesty Michael you seem to just beat around the bush all the time and never come back with a straight answer or a meaningful reason why computers don’t this.
