Myself if I could afford it,I would pay cause I would want no percieved obligation to stay if he turned out to be a dud.

If he is insisting you go up(or down or east or west) to see him badly... and he wants to pay... the sure... just maybe spring for a couple dinners and nights out... otherwise splitting it the best way to handle this situation.
