cy·clone (sīklōn′) n. 1. Meteorology a. An atmospheric system characterized by the rapid inward circulation of air masses about a low-pressure center, usually accompanied by stormy, often destructive weather. Cyclones circulate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. b. A violent tropical storm, especially one originating in the southwestern Pacific Ocean or Indian Ocean. 2. A violent rotating windstorm. 3. Any of various devices using centrifugal force to separate materials. ===================================================== ty·phoon (tī-fn) n. A tropical cyclone occurring in the western Pacific or Indian oceans. =================================================== hur·ri·cane (hûrĭ-kān′, hŭr-) n. 1. A severe tropical cyclone originating in the equatorial regions of the Atlantic Ocean or Caribbean Sea or eastern regions of the Pacific Ocean, traveling north, northwest, or northeast from its point of origin, and usually involving heavy rains. 2. A wind with a speed greater than 74 miles (119 kilometers) per hour, according to the Beaufort scale. 3. Something resembling a hurricane in force or speed. Location, location, location.... LOL..ok. Well what hit in the Wizard of Oz in Kansas? Dorthy said the "cyclone" (a tornado). Cyclones are very commonly noted as tornados. Hurricanes, in the Pacific are Typhoons. Although the actions are simular, given the rotation pattern, a cyclone/tornado covers a much thinnner path than a typhoon/hurricane. No matter which you want to call it...the effects are obvious. Land, and a tornado has the finger of god!!!! |

Wow love for fellow humans is slightly low in this thread.

yeah, it managed to knock off only 20,000 people.... Sure, you take a tornado, like an F-5 and push it right into New York City and you can have hundreds of thousands dead, especially if there is no warning system and buildings.houses that are made out of literal sticks. People should understand that this hit in a pretty heavy populated area and again, no warning system and places that would collapse if a bad rainstorm hit. It is a tragic event none the less. So I am not belittling the situation. |

mankind has evolved into an out of control virus, the earth as a living organism is merely trying to rid herself of the infection...too bad it was only 22,000. Hm. And why pick Bhurma then? that's not a big polluter.. we are as part of Earth asd the trees are. |

Wonder what this thing did to the tiger population....They are kind of hanging by a thread there to begin with.. Something like this could have wiped that small remaining population out completely. Sad.
I still think it's Bush's fault. |

Today, a top U.S. diplomat warned that the death toll from a devastating cyclone could top 100,000.

I have no feelings about people I dont know. humanity is a burden on the earth, I believe we are akin to a virus and that the earth as a living organism sometimes unleashes her immune system to combat the plauge

Who the hell pissed in your cereal this morning, such morbid words expressed at the loss of "human" life. Loss of life was extreme, who cities wiped out. Treat others how you would like them to treat you. |

I do, Id rather have cold impersonal honesty than this sappy hypocritical out pouring of "affection" from the comfort of your sofa, for people you dont know and really dont give a sh!it about. By the end of the week you'll find some story about a poor puppy or child who will take your attention away from this "horrid" story.... |

Oh ok so you're not really cynical or detached..you just want to be above such sappy human being. How splendid. There is one very honest act you can think of if you are convinced you are a virus...free the Earth of that virus? Now that would make a point. you're getting better by the minute. Keep it up. |
