I think it's a little of both.

I've chosen not to compromise my standards, not to lose sight of what's important to me, what I want in a relationship. It seems that I have considerable access to people who are wholly incompatible with me.

The circumstantial part comes in because it's difficult for me to believe there really aren't ANY viable prospects out there -- I see this as a circumstance of geography, to a large extent, as well as a dearth of constructive connections. Those things can be changed though.
