Air: a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, and minute amounts of other gases that surrounds the earth and forms its atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide: a colorless, odorless, incombustible gas, CO2, present in the atmosphere and formed during respiration, usually obtained from coal, coke, or natural gas by combustion, from carbohydrates by fermentation, by reaction of acid with limestone or other carbonates, or naturally from springs: used extensively in industry as dry ice, or carbon dioxide snow, in carbonated beverages, fire extinguishers, etc. The earth's climate, for millions of years relied on a balance. Flora vs fauna. Air breathing animals exhale carbon dioxide which is then used by plants during photosynthesis to create sugar and release oxygen back into the atmosphere. Then humans come along ... cut down and remove about 60% of the world's plant life, use manufacturing techniques that release even more carbon dioxide into the air (not to mention sulfur dioxide and hundreds of other--worse--toxins into the atmosphere). Come on, is it so hard to believe humanity hasn't screwed SOMEthing up? Really? Since earth is a closed system (check your college biology textbook for a full explanation), it is not possible to "destroy" or "harm" nature. It is possible to convert it into other things, but that is a different question. If you check your physics book, you'll also find that the AGW "theory" violates the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics. Earth is NOT a closed system. Earth receives energy from the sun, thus the sun is a member of the thermodynamic system. The earth also radiates heat into space. AGW does not violate any laws of physics. First: Yes, I agree that people like Ira ARE a threat to logical discourse (a/k/a 'debate', 'conversation', etc). Yes, I know people like Ira. The kindest way I can describe them (and him) is to say they're volitionally delusional. Ira's 'wanting' to be a 'unicorn' does not, in and of itself, MAKE him a 'unicorn'. If he carries this to its logical conclusion and begins to BELIEVE he's a unicorn, he crosses the line from 'play' to 'threat', because that crossing indicates loss of contact with objective reality. The truly scary part of that scenario is NOT that he becomes a threat to others directly, because 'unicorns' are 'peaceful', right? The threat he poses is at the ballot box when he VOTES. He'll vote for OTHER 'unicorns'. He thus becomes an INDIRECT threat by exercising HIS 'reality' through an 'elected representative' to bring about 'justice' or some other fictional 'benefit' for ALL 'unicorns'. Can anyone say 'Entitlement Society' or 'I Wants MINEZ!' ... ? The world has enough 'Ira's - and 'college educated' doesn't carry the weight it once did - he's living proof. I agree all the way up to the bolded part. I do not think the dividing line between rational and irrational crosses political systems of governance as directly as socialism vs capitalism. I happen to not agree with most entitlement programs as a fiscal conservative myself, however am not want to claim those that do are particularly irrational, just wrong. Communism need not be irrational to be bad for the governing game. I would say the example of reliocrat vs secular would be a better example. A leader proclaiming they have received orders from god, or god helped them settle a particular bit of governance would fall under the category of non-demonstrability of said unicorn of wisdom's existance. |

As I said before, it may not be that we are stupid, but more that we have been under-educated. Well and that is what the paper ended up with its conclusion, that if a 90% confidence level can be established widely amongst the public that a given outcome will pass given certain behaviors, ie if we keep doing x, then outcome y will occur. The conclusion is that we could as a whole modify our behavior, and this requires a lot of education when it comes to the climate, the environment, and sustainability in general.
Also we have to convince people even with this massive propaganda machine in place to confuse the topic. |

The AGW skeptics crack me up.
http://www.skepticalscience.com/Are-we-too-stupid.html Very interesting article asking the basic question, "Are we too stupid", humanity as a whole that is, to take the needed collective corrective actions to prevent tragic global climate change. Since humans aren't responsible for climate change, the question is moot. But, feel free to humor yourself. |

One mans paranoia is another mans SOP.
My point is that the term paranoia is not quantifiable, at least in any way I can understand. So if you think you dog is trying to kill you by the slow release of methane, I would be tempted to call you paranoid. HOWEVER I would also be tempted to call every single anti-Government wack job that thinks the gubmint is out to get him as paranoid also, even tho examples can be provided where the government in question has done just such a thing, so whats the diff? So how does one determine what is actually paranoia, and what is just normal concern? Its the same question as asking why my life experience leads me to any given subjective conclusion I reach: its currently not something we can define objectively and thus remains arbitrary. I think my ancestors where concerned just the right amount about random predators jumping out of bushes to get me to where I am myself, heck I even have some empirical evidence for that one! :) BTW did that shadow just move? I think I may need to ward off random ninja assassins, gib me a min hun . . . |

Yea the practical complications are the things learned in development, far too often we fail to realize until we get started.
Its fascinating how early we are into this research and yet how far we have come, very exciting. |

Its a pity, the video you liked was full of woo, I had hoped when I clicked the link it was about this . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLCT3wU4fek&feature=related
Science does not posit terms like spiritual higher planes without defining such things mathematically, that vid you posted was word soup at best. |

Dude...THEY ( the Liberals ) care. They care about EVERYTHING that makes Republicans look bad. What they DON'T care about is the fact that nearly every violent act or riot that happened during a protest was a result of LIBERALS. Name ONE Conservative protest that resulted in a riot?? They can't. That's why, when I see them wringing their hands about the " violence " against them because of the Health Care bill..all I can do is laugh at the sheer hypocrisy of their words. This strikes me as a completely Xenophobic comment. Here let this article from Forbes describe my position. http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2005/0328/046.html If you do not understand the relation . . . |

Gay teen in prom case is local pariah, national heroine http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/03/26/constance.mcmillen.tension/index.html?hpt=C1 *Constance McMillen in news after school cancels prom; she wanted to bring girlfriend *Support nationally shows in TV visits, prom offers, Facebook fans and scholarship *At home, Mississippi high school senior deals with tensions, anxiety, "hostility" *Her and ACLU's fight inspires others, making her poster child for LGBT student activism Constance McMillen has become somewhat of a national celebrity. She never asked for it, it just happened. All she wanted to do was to take her lesbian girlfriend to Senior Prom. Trouble is she lives in a backwardly conservative hick-town like Fulton, Mississippi. Her high school acted "stupidly," by canceling the prom, and look at the havoc, the attention, the legal fees, the school has brought upon itself by this insensitive act they chose to pursue. It is so sad and shameful for this country that places like Fulton, MS and many others in the South and other parts of the country, that would deny someone the chance to go to prom because of sexual orientation, or even race, or religious affiliation. It's 2010, and we're America, but many Americans still act as though it's the 1950s or 60s. I am fully in support of gay couples being allowed to go to prom, and any other school sponsored event. What the high school did was wrong, and they should be ashamed of themselves. Weigh in, everybody. ![]() I think the issue is mute, since none of the kids will now have a prom. Religious affiliation is hard to discern without an individual sharing some information as is sexual orientation however RACE is right there for everyone to see from birth. So I disagree with comparing this issue with racism,,,but thats beside the point. Do I feel she should be able to go to the prom, sure. Do I feel those paying for and holding the prom have a right to set up a THEME for that dance,,,sure. If it was set as a straight couples dance, and other guidelines were in place such as one date per attendee, or a certain dress code, or things of that nature ,,I dont see the harm. I would much rather see a push for an alternative prom for any non traditional type couples(same sex, cross dressers, trans...etc..) as well as the traditional one. I think it is wonderful she stands up for herself, and am not extremely passionate about it one way or the other,,, but I can definitely see both sides. Oh you do? What about mixed couples going to a prom? A white boy with a black girl, or a black boy with a white girl? You really don't think that's an issue in the South, or some other conservative communities? What if I went to prom with an Arab girl, complete in headress hijab? You don't think it would be an issue? Yes, this particular concern is focused on sexual orientation, but the other biases exist in this country as well concerning school social events. that is exactly my point,, you can SEE a white boy with a black girl,, you cant SEE a homosexual male with a homosexual girl,,you just see a boy and a girl, so the discrimination is VASTLY different. One is about what people can see from birth that cant be hid or undone,, the other is about what people observe someone DOING, which is a choice. I know my opinion wont be popular but the ONE relationship that we always will NEED is that of the male female union which creates life. A dance that sticks to that basic guideline is not so horrendous in my opinion. whether it be a black and white male and female or an arab and italian male and female, should have no bearing. As far as this particular case, I am really not passionate about it one way or the other. Im not particularly offended by a traditional male female dance, but Im not gonna kill myself if other pairings are included either. Its an option, a stupid, silly option but the same kind of option, HIDE. You either hide what and who you are or you are condemned, its the same exact thing just a different characteristic. |

To day the federal government arresed 15 white americans for playing soldier in the woods . How can they find 15 people out in the woods when they can't find 59 million illegals on our streets . Those arrested broke no laws other than being christain god loving humans . They havn't smuggled drugs into the country , taken jobs from people who have a right to them . I'd bet money that you checked the personel records of the FBI you could find a lot of illegals there , and even more at social secruty office to . Do you take this as an attact on christain america for being christain . This country has a record of over prosicution of christains . Does this tell you where there heart is. What they have planned . Lets tell them this time and from now on no more citizens to be persecuted because of there religion or legally playing soldier in the dam woods This is not political news, this is your personal semi version of a recent news story with extreme exaggeration. Shouldn't even be posted here. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/29/AR2010032901891.html http://www.cbsnews.com/2300-504083_162-10002955.html There own website: http://www.hutaree.com/ My opinion is they where breaking many laws, conspiring to commit acts of unlawful violence and an intervention by the FBI was completely warranted. I also found many many Christian websites that where vehement about denouncing this group as totally anti Christian due to their violent nature, and use of propaganda. I do not normally link to christian sites, but here is one of the catholic sites denouncing the group. http://www.catholic.org/national/national_story.php?id=35992 |

Why we should ditch religion

Most of the religious I meet are more moral then their gods. The gods are purported to do some terrible things that if a human where to do would be atrocious, but if a supreme being does it . . . I am sorry I have no desire whatsoever to worship such a being real or imagined. The bible specifically either must be guarded via the twisting of logic and reason, or cherry picked to be representative of most of the religious worldviews.
Cognitive dissonance indeed. |

All types of pattern recognition systems suffer from two types of errors, there is the type 1 error, the false positive, and there is the type 2 error, the false negative.
HADD is a type 1 error, of seeing something that isn’t there. There is a trade-off between these two types of errors, you can have zero type 1 errors if you reject every instance, but then your type 2 error rate is maximized. You can have a zero type 2 error rate if you accept every instance but then the false positive rate is maximized. There is a deal of pattern recognition in all forms of communication. The bit count of the data stream is insufficient to convey the information content of language without enormous data compression and decompression at the other end. That decompression is pattern recognition. When the compression and decompression are done seamlessly and with little loss in data, there is good communication with no misunderstanding. When the data compression and decompression do not happen seamlessly, then there is data loss, and the message can be garbled or misunderstood. Usually the data compression and decompression happens seamlessly and is transparent to the users, they are not aware that it is happening. They become aware when it does not happen seamlessly, when the error rate goes up, there is miscommunication, and then there are default responses. I think one of the default responses to a high error rate in communication, and particularly in non-verbal communication is the triggering of xenophobia. It may not always be that simple, but that may be an important component. http://daedalus2u.blogspot.com/2010/03/physiology-behind-xenophobia.html An interesting comment from Daedalus who also has an interesting blog. http://daedalus2u.blogspot.com/2010/03/physiology-behind-xenophobia.html |
