Laughing at the picture of him barking at his food! Once when I was very broke, I had to mix chicken scraps & rice in with my dogs regular food to stretch it. The next time she was faced with a bowl of plain dry food she refused to eat it. She stared at the bowl, then at me & eventually walked away. Later she picked out 1 piece & spit out out on the sfa next to me! Plain as day she was saying, "you don't really expect me to EAT this crap do you?" My roommate& I laughed until we cried! After about 5 hours she got hungry & ate it.

Hehee that is so cute. My guy is a little bit of a picky eater when it comes to dog food he will only eat kibbles and bits but if he finds anything non-edible on the floor all bets are off and he will try his best to eat it. I had to stick my fingers in his mouth a couple of times to fish out random things like a bingo ball. I've learned now that nothing on the floor or within his reach is safe. He has also learned to push the button on my printer to make the paper come out so he can reach it and tear it to bits all over the house.

Oh he is adorable! happy

Please don't take offense, but did you check out the breed before you chose him, or did the cute get to you? The breeder should have educated you a bit. All breeds have thier stregths & weaknesses, A good breeder would help you decide if thier breed suits you.

The site I posted has a list of some good points about dauchsunds too.

I actually did not pick him out or choose the breed. My StepBrother bought the dog for my StepFather and the dog chose me to be his Mommy. So I am dealing with everything while everyone else who made the decision to purchase him when I wasn't even there gives him an occasional petting.
I spoke with the breeder when I first got him about what to feed him and also house breaking him. They initially told me he ate Purina Puppy Chow but after I bought a bag he refused to eat it and would only bark at it and push it out of his bowl. They also told me he was trained to sleep in his crate and he is. When he first came home he didn't use the bathroom in the house for about 2 weeks and then he started pooping behind my Moms bed. Now he stopped pooping inside and has started peeing everywhere just randomly. Maybe I should call the breeder again.

I'm surfing about dachshunds. Apparently they are known to be harder to housebreak than most breeds.

"Housebreaking. As a behavioral consultant, I would put the Dachshund on my Top 20 List of "Hard to Housebreak." Consistent crate training is mandatory. Sometimes a doggy door is necessary. And some owners never do get their Dachshunds fully housebroken."

I read that also. They are also destructive and agressive. I'm not sure what exactly hes got going in his favor other than being so darn adorable.

My brother has a red nose pit and he is an extremely intelligent dog. Not nearly as adorable as my little daschund though.
