The "Federal Minimum Wage" for covered, nonexempt employees is $5.15 per
hour. The federal minimum wage provisions are contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Many states also have minimum wage laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two minimum wages. The FLSA does not provide wage payment or collection procedures for an employee's usual or promised wages or commissions in excess of those required by the FLSA. However, some states do have laws under which such claims (sometimes including fringe benefits) may be filed. The Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division administers and enforces the federal minimum wage law. |

Wages - Subminimum Wage
Laws & Regulations on This Topic The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provides for the employment of certain individuals at wage rates below the minimum wage. These individuals include student-learners (vocational education students), as well as full-time students employed by retail or service establishments, agriculture, or institutions of higher education. Also included are individuals whose earning or productive capacity is impaired by a physical or mental disability, including those related to age or injury, for the work to be performed. Employment at less than the minimum wage is designed to prevent the loss of employment opportunities for these individuals. Certificates issued by the Department of Labor’s Wage & Hour Division are required for this type of employment. The youth minimum wage is authorized by the FLSA, which allows employers to pay employees under 20 years of age a lower wage for 90 calendar days after they are first employed. Any wage rate above $4.25 an hour may be paid to eligible workers during this 90-day period. Compliance assistance materials regarding the subminimum wage are available from the Office of Compliance Assistance Policy's Web site. |

KYman, Those are directly from the US Department of Labor so if you find
ANY contradicting information it is WRONG... |

Actually Sluggo your wrong there. Currently states are given a 6 month
window on the minimum age which as of Jan 1 was increased to I believe 7 dollars an hour and by june or July it must be atlest 7.25 an hour if I am not mistaken in every state. If the states do not comply they will not be eligable for any federal funding or aid. |

If you google it you will find that It was proposed and passed to be
7.25 within a two year period but has already taken effect in many states prior to its actual inception Pennsylvania, Oklahoma and NY are amoung the states that adopted the increase prior for sure. I just finished reading an article that said when it went to vote in OK only one vote was against it being raised. Many of the business owners are upset by this nationwide as now they have to pay their workers a semi fair wage for the same amount of work. What they are doing to twart that is they are reducing their staffs and making the workers take on the extra workload. The workers will get tired of that quickly and start to slack off as they always have in the past thinking Minimum wage for Minimum work and educational level. The wage has nothing to do with how many hours you work but only if your in training or not. In Pennsylvania it is already at 7 dollars an hour to be increased another quarter in June or July if I am not mistaken. The bad part about it is if you do not make minimum wage you will typically not get an increase in your pay commesurate to the new people comming in the door. |
