To help me with something... all opinions welcome...

Does it mean it's time to get a new monitor when it screeches at you every time you're logging off, or is there a simple fix for this?

It's a brain piercing screech... I have to turn off the monitor while my computer is logging off because I can't stand it. It didn't always do that.

Hey sugar that is not your monitor. Do you have a microphone on it? Or external speakers. Sounds like you are getting some feedback there. BTW don't know about qualifications of these other guys but I just retired from being a computer manager for a big university. It's not a picture problem; it's a sound problem. I mean do you see it or hear it?

He's right this is not your moniter. Most likely you have a mic somewhere close to a subwoofer.

I've seen this before...You probably sat the monitor on the cat the last time you dusted... Let him out and it will be fine.

Yeah, you have maybe your mic volume on your pc all the way up, and it needs to be turned down, or move it away from the speakers.

It could be the electronics squealing from components being on their death throws. Stuff like step-up transformers going bad or capacitors going out.

Flat panels are cheap right now, so you'd best be served by going out and getting one, anyway.

feed back would be constant not just at powering down

turn your sound down as far as you can

mybe even mute it in the sounds and devices from control panel

assuming you have xp my bad

if the sound persists

go to my computer left click c

proberties

tool error check

check both boxes

a box will come up can not perfom now do you want to at next start up click yes

exit

start then restart

let the error check thru through completly

then when finished see if sound continues

if so isolate source

if turning of monitor does not create sound when not shutting down

i do not understand why it would when shutting down

but hey i have seen weirder things

are your speakers in your monitor

good luck

Thanks for the info.. it's definitely not a feedback issue. I know what that sounds like, I've been around music equipment my whole life.

By the way forever_fifites please don't call me sugar again.. that creeped me out. lol

I have external speakers set up and they will play music or dead air just fine with the monitor off. Sometimes when I'm just sitting here online, I'll hear a tiny, very unnoticeable electronic screech in my ear, and when I realize it's my computer, I turn off the monitor for a second and turn it back on and it stops. If I have my speakers off during shutdown, I still get a very loud screeching noise.

I'm thinking you missed a step, because I have no idea where this tool error check is... yes, I have Windows XP.

jmao...sounds like, if you have a crt monitor, you could be getting high voltage leakage, possibly from the high voltage lead to the crt. That could cause your speakers to scream, and, if you are used to listening to music, you could quite possibly hear the sound of the arcing inside your monitor. Don't stick your hand in there to check it out, however...laugh just a note, the freq of most crt systems is around 40 - 50Khz. The arcing would normally sound kinda like a high pitched noisy flourescent lite. Make your head ache and your teeth hurt...lol

Oh ok, you meant right-click on the C-drive. Thanks, I found it.. the scan fixed lots of messed up areas, but it didn't change that.

I tried several things...
I unplugged my mic and rebooted, and it still made the noise.
I messed with my volume settings and turned down everything except my actual volume and rebooted and this made the sound lessen a little bit, but it's still brain-piercing.

I muted the volume and rebooted again and didn't hear the noise, so apparently some of you were right as far as the feedback issue... only now I still have no clue how to fix it, because I don't have a mic attached at all.

At least I can mute my computer whenever I'm going to log off. Thanks everyone for your help. flowerforyou flowerforyou flowerforyou

I suspect your audio card is the culprit.

when does this noise come about? Maybe someone messed with your computer as a joke and recorded a screeching noise and added it into the Windows Start up sound? If this isnt possible then n/m

If so? Start, Settings Control Panel, Click on Sounds and look for the windows startup sound, remove it and see what that does.

Hmm
