Is it a single family house??

Or is there a section of basement in someone else's residence you can't get to??

You're looking for a "Sump Crock" - it's a little bigger than a five-gallon bucket and it's IN the basement floor. It'll be in the lowest corner of the basement. All you'll see is a lid of cover over it, maybe an inch or two of the lip up above the level of the basement floor.

And there will be a pipe coming straight up out of that crock - that's where the water flows out through the wall just above ground level into your yard.

Agreed, the only exception to the "No Fruit" rule is lime in Mexican beer.

And no drinks with decorations in 'em!

Well JT how old IS this house??

If it doesn't have drain tiles and a sump pump THAT could be the answer to your question!

Is it on the top of a hill or something that it wouldn't need drainage?

Ahhh...

They didn't put in drain tiles... and don't ask me why they're called drain tiles when it's actually piping underneath the floor of the basement.

The drainage system is a pipe or hose - usually about six inches or so in diameter - that's laid under the floor of the basement. It's about a foot or so inside the exterior walls and six or eight inches below the basement floor surface.

The water seeps into the basement walls then runs down to the floor level - it runs into the drain pipes through holes in that pipe just for that purpose.

The pipe is angled slightly so the water flows into the Sump - that's the bucket thing in the floor you were looking for.

The sump pump has an arm on it just like inside your toilet tank. When the float goes up high enough it triggers the sump pump to kick on - draining out the sump.

But your house doesn't have that. It has water in the basement instead.

So what do you do about this you ask?

You can dig up the floor all the way around the edges of the basement and put in the drainage system... but then with an old house I don't suggest that.

I'd recommend not putting any valuables on the floor in the basement and investing in a good dehumidifier.

ohwell

actually the thing i was talking about earlier is a Dehumidifier.not sure why i called it an air purifier and i'd be afraid to dig up the floor since it's all concrete in the basement cause couldn't that cause the house to tilt or sink being it would take away some of the support?

Hiya Misty! drinker Yep, it's plumbing again!

Yeah JT, with an older house you never know what you're getting into if you start digging around.

Just for a day or two and just a foot or so down wouldn't matter, but you're asking for other problems with a 70 year old foundation.
