Last Ride
He was a dear friend And a man among men, With a heart cast of pure gold. He didn't ride to gain fame, Never cussed or gave blame, For his breed was so rare and so bold. A few broken bones, With an ache and some groans, From the last go round that he made. He rode for the fun And worked in the sun, Till in retirement finally he laid. This cowboy, my friend, He laughed till the end, Till the day that he couldn't stay. Still donned in his hat With boots covered in dust, He wanted to be remembered this way. It wasn't the cancer that carried him off, Nor death, once he mentioned in audible scoff, Though death's horse he knew he would ride. Oh how he yearned for that one last ride. I was happy to know that he passed in his sleep, These memories of him, forever I'll keep, Till we meet some where again in due time. Fadedspirit 2/26/2008 Dedicated for the best friend I ever knew. For anyone that cares, my friend had lived with cancer 12 years before he rode away. Still, he lived his cowboy life and treated everyone he encountered with respect and a song till he passed away at 68. |
