Too much to name, but Ill throw this out there, Dragon Force. I know not everyone likes them but if youre a musician you can have nothing but respect for these musical warriors.

Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath are about the only really neccesary heavy metal bands, IMHO. CCR's good. Pretty much anything from the 60s is good, and probably almost anything from the 70s.
