Have a computer running Vista, that turns on when it wants and other times when I try to turn it on, it only beeps.

any suggestions?

Looked online - comp beeps twice; one short, one long beep seconds intervals.

Have taken it back to store, supposedly they cleaned the harddrive (had virus) and worked there, today same b.s.

Please HELP.

Be careful about trying to reformat and install XP as I am pretty sure you have SATA drives and you would lose the SATA drivers so the install would not work. Plus all of the device drivers are Vista and will not work with XP so you would have to attempt to find all of the components on the computers XP drivers and install them also. Not sure about the beep code you are getting but does it have USB mouse and keyboard?

everywhere I have asked have explained that the short/long beep means a problem w/the mother board. however, computer works fine at the store...

Loading Windows XP on a SATA drive
Just in case anyone else has this problem and doesn't want to spend an hour figuring it out...

If you are loading Windows XP onto a computer with a serial ATA (SATA) hard drive, you will have to manually load the SATA drivers.

As suggested on this usenet post, you need to put the drivers on a floppy disk.

Copy the drivers from motherboard support CD *\DriverDisk\SATA\*.* into root directory of floppy disk. (i.e. root directory of floppy disk should contain \pide and \sata folders, txtsetup.oem, etc. files.)

Then, boot system by Windows XP installation CD, when the message "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver" shows up, press "F6". Then, press "S" to specify additional device when next screen pops up. Put the driver floppy disk you made in and press enter to continue. If the floppy disk is made successfully, the installation program will ask for selecting driver. Please then select "VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller(Windows XP)".) After SATA driver loaded and Windows XP can recognize the SATA HDD, you can continue to install Windows XP as usual.

This should work fine if you have the drivers on a CD somewhere.

Here's what not to do:
1) Pull floppy drive from another computer
2) Get lazy and not install the floppy, simply hang it by cables on the side of computer
3) After using floppy, allow the exposed circuitboard to touch the case
4) Watch smoke come from the floppy drive since the power was shorted out
5) Toss floppy drive in the trash

it guy here....whenever it beeps like that while it is "posting"(power on self test) that usually means there is a hardware issue such as a video card or sound card. If you want to go with XP or something similar like 2000 you will have to get that issue worked out first. What kind of laptop and what model I can probably tell you what the beeps mean.

I can't even tell you what it means, never heard of a short beep, then a long beep. However I would say it is probably memory related or possibly BIOS, try reseating your memory on your motherboard (do a google search on how to do this properly) if that doesn't work contact your BIOS's manufacturer and discuss the issue with them.

After the last bunch of updates, win2000 is doing the same exact thing on my son's computer, and on my Sisters computer.. I run Vista and have had no probs with it. I don't lose downloads, it turns on and off when I command it to, It just behaves perfectly for me.
