What did people do before doctors? Mommy put a hand on the forehead to get a temperature. Use your motherly/fatherly instinct and wisdom to know when it's time to see a doctor.

ESPECIALLY A HEAD DOCTOR.

Unless a doctor can show me an average chemical balance and then show me that I have a chemical imbalance, then screw that doctor.

WELL AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST MY SON BEING A TYPICAL 4 YEAR OLD,BUT I TOOK HIM TO THE DOCTOR AND FOUND OUT HE WAS BIPOLAR.

I do wonder at times if he has some kind of pshyclogical problem, his father (whom isnt in the picture) was a total nutwhack and I see him taking after himmad

Certain traits can be genetic, but its your guidance and wisdom that makes a good child. Not some doctor trying to put a buck in his pocket.

well of course its the parents who can direct their children in better directions, but what they are when they are older is their decision.

Four year olds whine, I wouldn't worry about it.

I've got a 6 yr old, a 4 yr old and a 2 year old...they've all had their whiney stages and phases. I disagree with the person who said that you can't speak to your child like an adult because they won't understand. I have never "baby talked" any of my children and as a result they are better able to handle rational thinking and problem solving. That's not to say there isn't times where I have to sit on them and such, but I'm not above looking at any 3 of my children (yes it includes the 2 year old) and tell them that their behavior is unacceptable and I fully expect them to behave and conduct themselves like a "big boy" or "big girl".

What I found worked best with my daughter (who by far was the worst about whining) was telling her that I can not understand her and will not speak to her when she whines. She can go to her room with the door closed until she is ready to discuss what the problem is with me, at which point I will be more than happy to talk to her about what she found upsetting. When she would start to whine again, I would put her in her room and close the door (without saying anything to her.) I kept that up until she would come out of her room and ask, "Mama, can we talk now? I'm ready to be a big girl." As long as she was no longer whining (sniffles don't count lol) I would let her sit down on the floor with me and we would talk about it.

It didn't take but a week or so of this for her to stop whining when she found out it didn't produce results.

Just a suggestion hon :D

AND ANOTHER THING IM NOT THE TYPE OF PARENT WHO WOULD SPEND THERE LAST 5 DOLLARS ON A PACK OF CIGARETTES IF MY CHILD NEEDED SOMETHING TO EAT.I SAW MY CHILD WAS HAVEING A PROBLEM CONTROLLING HIS EMOTIONS SO AS A PARENT I TOOK HIM TO A DOCTOR TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS.

Hey sweetie, I think you accidentally left your caps button on :)

And I only offered that as a possible solution for flirtyvirgo. Naturally, in your case, other options had to be explored.

Just be patient and stand your ground. Be consistant with your punishment promises. He is either testing you to see what he can and can't get away with....or he simply dosen't feel well. I know that when my 3 year old gets unusually whiney she is usually sleepy or dosen't feel well. And if it's just an attitude problem...then a quick butt busting won't hurt him and it will let him know that enough is enough. Good Luck!!happy

I was in denial for the first 4 yrs of my child's life.I tried everything and he would still have meltdowns. He was diagnosed with ADHD and since I put him on concerta he can concentrate in school and can work thru a frustrating moment. He does have his off days but this school year has been so much better. He is not a zombie either. He's very active, intelligent and thinks he's 40 lol.
rocket I would have him reevaluated though because childrens chemistry changes as they grow older.Frontline did a very good documentary about bipolar in children a few weeks back on PBS.Maybe you could order the video online or check when they are going to repeat it.It was very informative.Good Luck to you.

As for the op's question,my daughter was whiny and I put her in a room till she was ready to talk right. My son has to go to his room when he acts whiny also. Then when he calms down,we can talk. Just be consistent and the whining will stop especially if you don't give in to it.

When my 3 1/2 yr old son whines or doesn't listen I tell him I'm going to call Supernanny. :)

He loves to watch the show and says that he is NOT like those kids. LOL

He really isn't but there are some days that he is a little. :)
