TOKYO (Reuters) - Lovelorn staff at a Japanese marketing company can take paid time off after a bad break-up with a partner, with more "heartache leave" on offer as they get older.

Tokyo-based Hime & Company, which also gives staff paid time off to hit the shops during sales season, says heartache leave allows staff to cry themselves out and return to work refreshed. "Not everyone needs to take maternity leave but with heartbreak, everyone needs time off, just like when you get sick," CEO Miki Hiradate, whose company of six women markets cosmetics and other goods targeted for women, told Reuters by telephone.

Good or bad?

I'm with you, i've started 4 companies in the past. When an employee is having personal issues that they need to sort out you gotta give them time. Not only is it good for the employee, but its good for the company also. When the employees know that the company cares, moral is greatly improved.

I don't know about this one, where does it end, if you are sick, you are supposed to take sick leave. Sounds a bit ridiculous to me.

I agree that heart-broken employees are not as productive, but isn't that what personal leave is for. And in America it would have to be equal rights for same sex break-ups.

Well small companies vs big companies i guess, a bigger comapny is more likely to set a time limit on it, just like sick or personal leave. a smaller company is more likely to be able to know the employees on a more personal basis & hence someone is going to find out if they are getting taken advantage of...lol.

and how many times a year can you take advantage of this benefit? LJ the local weekend slut/Drama Queen could get paid time off every week and a weekend at the bar.

We have this already, it's called a Floating Holiday. It's to be used for any reason you want. In my opinion the time off described here is just another tool that would be abused.

Has anyone ever been so heart-broken and wasn't allowed to take time off from work?

Hmmmmm. I think heartache should require a minimum of 3 months off of work...paid in full. I mean.....how can one recover in a week? Or even two weeks? The human heart is such a mystery.laugh
