A lot of the ----ics words are like that, and can take a singular verb form. They tend to more "conceptual" than literal "plural" forms.

Like politics....or civics....

Heh, that's probably true!

But I was thinking about that old saying: "Politics makes strange bedfellows." "Makes" is a singular verb form -- if "politics" is an actual plural, then the saying should be "Politics make strange bedfellows." Which is wrong, and sounds it.

And the less said about strange bedfellows, the better.

Exactly. A lot of people miss that because we're so used to seeing words that end in "s" as automatic plurals -- and it can get really messed up when you have something like crisis/crises --
