Absolutely depends on their maturity level. But I would say around 12 or 13. Once they become a teenager. Mine is only 4. I've got a little bit to go until I even think of leaving her alone.

When my daughter was 9 we pretty much had to choose between housing and daycare ..so she became a latchkey kid. She was very mature though. And I don't know about leaving an 11 year old in charge of a 5 year old. It really depends on the kids. Would there be anyone nearby that the 11 year could call for help if needed?

All day!! I thought you meant for a few hours. I think a 5 year old might need someone other than an 11 year in charge for a whole day.

last fall when i started my new job, i started leavin my 11 and 13 year olds home for about 4 hours while i was at work.
After a couple weeks and it was not every day tho. After a couple weeks i got my best friend to start babysittin again. they r great kids but i realized that at their ages they push their limits and needed someone to be at the house with them. |

I had to put her in camps and whatnot, otherwise I would surely be a grandmother by now. She hated me at the time but now she is 17 and human again. |

Depends on the maturity. Twelve for short periods. Whole different story if they are going through a rebellious phase!

My oldest is almost 11 and I'll let him hang alone if I'll be back within an hour. I also let my neighbor (a good friend) know he's alone. No longer than an hour though.

I think legally you can't leave a child alone until they are 11. I think it depends on how mature they are, and it depends on how much you can trust them to stay out of things.
I have 2 boys, my first son was a lot more mature then my last one. I have known some people to leave their children alone when they are as young as 9, thats something I wouldn't do...but you have to do what is needed!! |

I did check with child welfare first because I did not want to get arrested. There were a list of conditions that had to be met but I could leave her home after school legally. I wished at the time I didn't have to but later I was glad I did. She is so much more self-sufficient than her friends. There is good and bad in every choice you have to make. |
