If we didn't have it, every president would be elected by the big northern cities..like New York, Philly etc..none of the less populated states in the south or west would ever have any say in our govenment. However...if not for the electoral college...the "popular" vote would still be monopolized by the big , populated cities, and states with less people still need a voice.

To deny Republican or Democrat and just say American is all to unrealistic, yes there are many parties (all American) including the socialist, communist and independant parties all of which are very active, but except for a few independants in congress there are only two viable parties...both being "AMERICAN" Democrat and Republican.

I'm pretty much a hardcore Democrat, but I used to respect McCain for his independence, but over the last 4-6 years he's definitely caved into the party pressure. I think Karl Rove must have gotten to him. He hasn't been the same since, pretty much goose-stepping in time with whatever the Bush admin wants. Too bad, I actually thought he was different.
