It might have something to do with money being the number one cause of arguments and divorce. Too many people struggle to make ends meet, so they keep wishing for greater financial security. One ends to that means is to avoid people who lack money, whether that means protecting one's own finances or leaching off of somebody else's.

Personally, I agree that it shouldn't be about money. A couple should work together, not against each other.
