Anyone on Mingle2 into sewing? Tell me or show me what you make? I am interested because I have heard that home sewing is dying out. Here is a picture of a dress I designed and made:

That is a pretty dress. Sewing clothing has become expensive for the average person. I personally am a jeans n T-shirt woman however in the day of office attire and beautiful gowns....I sewed my lil heart out lol

I still sew but mostly curtains and pillows and costumes now days. I have thought of getting a few patterns and trying my hand at dresses. Maybe I should do that.

Queenie & HappyOleGal:

There is a good website for unbiased reviews on sewing patterns & machines. It is called Pattern Review. It requires you to make an account but that is to keep the spammers out. It is free to join.

http://sewing.patternreview.com/

I have this site to be pretty useful for pattern reviews. Plus, it is hard to find sewing patterns for men.

I just joined & I sew some. I've sewn quilts and/or blankets for both my girls, myself, friends & other family. I just finished making about 3 sets of pajamas for myself and I also make my own corsets.

I sew for a living. I make medieval clothing. Went from being a teacher and paramedic to seamstress. Lol. And I love it.

I'm a sewer until now while working in Riyadh. I did repair with my Madam's dress and clothes each time they need it and another income too. Love it

Last thing I did was cut the legs off my old jeans and made a vest from it. Haven't did any sewing since I was a teenager.

I haven't done any real sewing since my divorce in approx 2002.
Until then I made an incredible amount of clothes, including christening
outfits for my kids. They were christened in one go, one a baby, the
other a toddler. And clothes for their 1st communion. Raw embroidered
ivory silk for my girl's dress. love
Winter coats, summer coats, whatever I liked for the kids I made.
I often went into an Oilily shop -which we couldn't afford-, remembered
the pattern and style of different fabrics used in one garment, then
made my own :)
My kids always looked the part. I never had lessons, I taught myself.

For some reason I was done with it after the divorce and I've
rarely touched the machine since. I still got one, never even
threaded it, would have to look up on Google how to do that now, haha.

I don't have pics, but I sewed together a slalom kayak out of med-heavy canvas, using 2 steel wire frames and some fibreglass dome tent rods for shape, and a mile of Velcro. My own design and invention. It packs into a backpack with 3 part paddles. Still have it, and it works, if you are a lightweight.

Sewed a canvas skin for a coracle more recently.

Modified old army backpack gear for head mounted cameras and backpack recorders, back in the old video tape days, even with VHS.

Modified clothes and pockets and made own additions for hunting clothes.

Watch out when your thimble breaks, or slips, working on heavy material, ouch.

I still have my high school home economics class sewing machine license somewhere. Never been caught speeding or SUI. laugh

Im into sewing, I have made several bags for myself but Im not good at sewing clothes.
"Madebyyaya" channel on youtube has some good sewing tutorials I would like to try. It is one of my goals to make my own clothes, recycling old clothes to look different, so I dont have go out to buy new clothes.

The other day I was sorting out clothes, stored in a suitcase, and I
found the dress shirt I made for my son's 1st Christmas 29 yrs ago. At the time
he was almost 1 yrs old, so the shirt now seems incredibly smalle!
It is a proper dress shirt, which was a lot of work, especially in that size, hihi.

I also found the lilac broderie anglaise puff trousers I made for my girl when she was about a year old.

So cool to see! And those are things I will never throw away!

I started sewing by hand when I was five years old. Graduated to the machine, an old treadle model, when I was seven. I made a lot of my own clothes, the kids clothes, shirts for my husband. Now I can get good clothes cheap at thrift stores so my sewing is mainly baby blankets, throw pillows, and quilts.

Mechanics don't really rebuild wheel cylinders anymore, its cheaper to just replace it.

I can sew enough to mend something till I can replace it.
Its easier for me to just go buy a new one.

My mother used to darn socks (use a light bulb).

My sister and X used to make clothes.

I've never needed to do that.

I have however rebuilt wheel cylinders and master cylinders. I know how and have the tools but its getting harder and harder to find the individual parts needed.

When I get my gf dresses, I buy them.

Yes - sewing any fashion is mostly more expensive than buying a ready clothing. The components, the sewing plan, .... everything is expensive - and clthing in shops costs only very little money
