Topic: Atari 2600....The Good Old Days Of Gaming. | |

E.t. is by far the hardest game ever. I use to be a huge defender fan. And berzerk. That game was amazing. shot the robots but don't hit the walls. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_considered_the_worst_ever E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982, Atari 2600), a game based on the film E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial, was released for the Atari 2600 in 1982. In a time when the market was being flooded with dozens upon dozens of lackluster games, this game is cited as being a major cause of the Video Game Crash of 1983. Atari, expecting that the E.T. franchise and Christmas season would boost sales, produced millions of copies of the game, which turned out to be a disaster. It had poor controls and gameplay, a fact owed to its hasty development in just five weeks in an attempt to meet the anticipated Christmas rush. Sales were dismal and most copies went unsold -- "nearly all of them came back". The company then secretly crushed and buried the remainder of the cartridges in a landfill site near Alamogordo, New Mexico [10]. The E.T. fiasco cost Atari millions of dollars and contributed to the subsequent collapse of the company.[11][12] This game topped the PC World list of the 10 worst games of all time. It's also widely considered the worst game ever. |

Yeah Spider. ET sucked big time, but people still played the hell out of it. Just one of those games you had to beat. I cannot explain why.

I have only 1 thing to "say" about the ET post above:
I am still laughing!! I honestly had no idea that it SUCKED so bad they used it for landfill! |

Sorry I have a broken mouse (Not the kind in the attic) that makes me double post sometimes. Got to buy a new one.

Yeah. That is the legend of the ET game. If you read the full story behind it, then you will understand why that game sucked so bad.
Basically, it was rushed so quick like to get out before the Holiday season. I believe Pac Man was the same way, but Pac Man was able to be a good seller. |

Pac-Man was also packaged by Sears under a label : "Telegames" I think (I have not looked in the atari's main game box in about 13 years) and If I am not mistaken they (Sears) had an "Our brand" label for a lot of Atari games in that era.
(I have 3 copies of Pac-Man) Rushing production on ANY game or movie is just WRONG! I don't want to be shorted out for a deadline. Same thing I feel about movies being trimmed down because someone thinks "I" don't want to sit in a movie theater for 3-4 hours to see a movie. I also think they should have intermission like in the old movie days too ala Gone with the Wind. **More sales on DVD's with deleted scenes** All about the money..... |

Sears at one time had an "our brand" of everything. Now they just have K-Mart

Sears at one time had an "our brand" of everything. Now they just have K-Mart Ya there was a craze for a while that had Burger King selling Domino's pizza and tacos too. I have indeed seen the K-Mart "K"raftsman items and I doubt you could bring in your old "C"raftsman screwdriver to get a new one! |

Back on topic here.
I loved the first football game that came out for the Atari. The players were about as big as the field was, the ball was a square block. LOL. Things got better with the "Real Sports" Football. And Tennis. Oh man, my Mom and I played Tennis on Atari all the time. |
|
|
|
I actually remember the football game and the baseball game very well. I remember trying to make those block guys outta Lego!
Galaga is one of my all time favorites! I have a hard time getting past level 25-26. I usually have bought the farm by then. I really wanted to buy one of those arcade machines in the 90's but I spoke with a guy that repaired them for a living and he told me they were a pain for upkeep and high dollars for servicing. Decided that one day (before I croak) I wanna build a arcade cabinet myself for a game system to have the arcade feel. Found the plans on the internet, now all I need is the time and the room. |

|
Oh man. Loved me some Galaga back in the day. My dad and I would go to the arcade and play that...alot. Remember how when you wanted to play next on a game you would place your token up near the screen or somewhere else on the game? My dad and I would line our tokens on the bottom of the screen of Galage so that no one would bother us...lmao.
Space Invaders on Atari was cool. |

My 12 year old cousin got the Atari Flashback and he plays it more than he does his Wii and XBOX. Told me that his Flaashback was, "Totally Wicked"....and this boy is a country boy saying that. I just smiled and told him how me and his dad used to play those games all the time when we were kids. Glad to see the younger generation is getting there hands on the Atari. |

As an avid video game collector and recreational gamer, I totally agree with you. There was a presence to the Atari 2600 that does not exist today. Not to mention it was the era when american development dominated production.
Perhaps my favorite moment in recent memory was the Atari 2600 emulator ... which aside from PC has been constructed for PSP and Dreamcast. I still laugh at the black and white option on the console. |

lol I liked atari but my gen. was more nintendo I loved it too Now you have like 15 f*cking bottons and they games are stressful lol Yeah. My dad looks at my 360 controller and just asks...."Whatever happened to the one button and joystick?". Oh, and I had an NES too....I even had the one that came with the robot to play Gyromite. The gun for Duck Hunt. Ahhhhhhh! Need to start a NES thread now. |

Are you talking about Robbie the robot????LOL
Funny...that Atari joystick would snap and breal so easily. Then they came out with a 3rd party one which fired by pumping down on the stick itself.Problem was you would have to move and shoot with one hand. Not a good concept but I was dumb enough to buy it. |
