Seems kind of macabre to want to visit a site where people were murdered. I can see keeping the site as a memorial. But I would have no real desire to see it. I take it, that you do not view attending a funeral as a vacation day from work then |

Auschwitz. This is one of the most seen views, the railway track going through the entrance to birkenau, the main camp next to auschwitz. This was purpose built by the nazis where they murdered some 1.5 million men, women and children. They were separated as soon as they left the train. Most women and children plus the disabled and sick were taken straight to the gas chamber after being stripped. |

These are some of the footwear taken from the people before the were murdered. another that we couldn't take photos of was a 2 ton pile of hair that was cut off before they were murdered. they estimated some 30 tons was collected and used to make carpets and other materials. |

This picture shows one of the carriages they were transferred in. Up to 200 in each, some spending 2-3-4 days in them without food, water and sanitation. There were 47 other transfer camps around Europe, from Norway to Italy. |

This picture I took from one exhibited. It shows mothers and children just arrived at the camp and after being separated from loved ones. they were on the way to the gas chamber. |

The whole experience was very sobering, although very difficult to take in the sheer scale of the operation.
It was to be the final solution! I've seen several documentaries over the years but nothing compared with actually being on the same ground. Will it ever happen again? Probably not on such a scale no. Has it happened since? Yes! Thanks for taking time to read and letting me share my experience. |

Wow... Thanks Mikey for sharing, it's really heart breaking and sad how they were treated and to hear about their fate. So sad

Thanks for sharing Mikey.
It is that dark stain in our history, that will haunt us Germans forever. What and how it happened is simply not excusable. |

Very interesting pictures! I studied facts on Holocaust. Rememberance day 27th January United Nations General Assembly designed it for the six million Jewish victims. Sad day for many!!!
My grandfather was French migrated to US long before I was born. |
