A different angle to this are similar statements like..

....I'm just blunt.
....I tell it like it is.
....I just say what everyone is thinking, but afraid to say.

These (to me) are just copouts for lazy bad manners. As ego has been touched on here, I'm not really sure how this behaviour fits. Is it self righteousness and presumption or complete insecurity?....a cry for "identity" to be known as the "outspoken one"?

totally disagree...I think people who don't say what's are just ******* who will never get their head out of the sand...I won't trust anyone who is to scared to say what's really on their mind...

Often people use the phrase "Thats just who I am" or conversely, "Thats just not who I am"

My questions are: 1. Do we have a choice in 'who we are'?

2. If so, should we aim to make 'who we are' into 'who we will always be'?

3.If so, aren't we supporting a stagnate life without growth?

I always hear 'just who I am' as a defeatist copout of sorts, implying we play no parts and have no choices in our own , lets say, conditioning.

No. circumstances and other people shape us

No, we should be flexible and embrace change

I totally understand the disagreement. I wasn't clear. I certainly subscribe to "tell me your boundaries, opinions, feelings, what the hell do you want, etc." ideal.

I just don't trust the shock for shock's sake (Joan Rivers, Howard Stern, Emimem) model of this is who "I" am.

I didn't know you were referencing media types... They say they are saying what's on their minds, but you can't tell when money is involved, so I don't watch those types...

I believe in the basic goodness a person has although views of what is right and wrong varies. Life is a constant change and the way we perceive others changes too. An attitude that affects another person in a harmful way is for me something to be acknowledged and changed as for example a frustrated person pushed someone because she felt she had the right as a paying customer to do it. The term “it’s just the way I am “ I think is only acceptable with things that don’t really affect others in negative way like , I am just a quiet person or I’m happy go lucky. A good person is basically sensitive to others but doesn’t mean they have to conform their principles and beliefs of who and what they are. Just me

"Who you really are" is the actual result of your way of thinking in all you do;say;give and receive in this life. Finally;you decide for yourself. You can listen carefully or simply hear to others;you take it or you ignore it.

Of course; you can be better than yesterday;for now and for your future;for you and for your loved ones. You decide for yourself. Agendas are for that!

Be a good person for yourself and for your society...everyday!

Do; with passion, interest and intelligence;all you want to do;essentially;for your personal satisfaction and others.

Thanks for your "philosophy courses" above...very appreciated.

in text; YOU=anyone
