and he resigns...

Honestly ... did Peterson have any back up and could he call for any...at this time in or out of the school was this part of his duty for surveillance in the school a direct connection to the police ... what was the Sheriff Officer carrying ... more then likely a pistol...

so people believe they want a man to walk in and try and save these kids with a pistol ... and going against a automatic weapon ... this would have done nothing to help the children ... an more then likely all the doors where locked to even try and get in to the office ...

So the shooter would see him and gun him down and went on with the killing spree he went there for ... + there was so much confusion with these kids running out believing this was a fire drill ... like thought to begin with ... this has been a issue with guns... you see the police carrying automatic weapons ... and people get freaked out becouse of ... but they more then likely are up against automatic weapons on the city streets... when there is heavy violence...

I personally would not have blamed this officer... which is being used as a scapegoat ... for not having a better security system in place for him and the children ... in that school ...

may those children rest in peace ... very sorry to hear

I'm not sure if scapegoat is the right word... It's his job to protect the kids... Seems to me that either he stops the shooter, or dies from the shooter... either way, he would be a hero, not a scapegoat...

sure they are going to use him as a person to blame ...

Honestly to die for just being a hero ... when he had know other means to protect himself ... that is suicide... and he new that ... now that is if he was carrying a pistol... up against a automatic weapon ...

its like saying don"t bring a knife ...to a gun fight ...

I say we agree to disagree Moe ... since we really don't know all of the circumstances ... some thought this was a fire drill ... and they shut all the doors... and with kids running out and if he ran in ... he would not know who was who until he came right on up to the shooter ... their would have been know chance practice or not different guns are just different guns he would have had to have a clean shot ... personally I do not believe that could have happened with all the confusion ... until we learn more ... but again we don't know how much that sheriff had for security for that whole school ... they where also saying there was a delay in time on the films you where watching on tv ... I still think they had to put the blame on him ... so as for others not to take any blame ... but who the h*ll knows ...

it is sad ... but maybe the school can look in to different security

where the nxt sheriff can get back up faster ... and the teachers get hooked up to the police stations for faster results from their class rms ... when gun violence a cures ... I am sure all teachers have a cell and can get a app to the police ...as they go into lock down in their class rms ...

I heard and your right ... but I am still going to push for more security's in schools ... not just one sheriff to fight a battle with a automatic weapon ... that is not security ... all schools need a system put in place ... we have to remember this seems to start as a fire drill ... not a mass shooter ... lots of confusion ...

thanks for your input ... got to go have a good one ...smile2

I think its partly because it doesnt bode well for those who will be pushing for 'armed' protection at school, where this school had such protection and still saw 17 deaths

I also agree that someone in a mass shooter situation, armed or not, may not be as prepared and calm as people assume they will or should be, the same reason fearful police shoot unarmed suspects, in life and death situations, things are not always gonna happen as one 'prepared' for in some simulation.

isn't that his whole job, to be prepared for anything? Why else is he there? They're trained to be prepared for anything, that's the polices job...look at it like a pilot, they might go their whole career without an incident, but all their training and expertise is only needed that one time when something does go wrong, and they save all the lives on that plane, because that's what they train so hard for... The sheriff's deputies job is to protect and save lives... Maybe he did by doing whatever it was he was doing, but he didn't stop Innocents lives being taken...

The troubled teen authorities say killed 17 people at a Florida high school excelled in an air-rifle marksmanship program supported by a grant from the National Rifle Association Foundation, part of a multimillion-dollar effort by the gun group to support youth shooting clubs

no word on what 'training' resource officer received

yeah, as sad as it is, dying for nothing doesnt appeal to me either, I also have children and they need me

if dying was not going to save a life, and only going to add me to the list, Id stand down too ... especially if better equipped and trained people were on the way ....

I like that particular path of thinking. I do not feel it is good for kids to try to attend school surrounded by people with weapons on campus, AT THEIR SCHOOL

but perhaps building schools and police stations closer to each other, or having guard stations NEAR the schools with vets who have experience and training in ACTUAL situations of mass chaos, along with security systems that ID gun shots immediately and dial in to the nearest guard station

and before it gets to that point, perhaps they could do more when monitoring social media (which they already do) to monitor the possession and sale of guns to those threatening to use them for killing others

this kid threatened and revealed this AR-15 several times, freedom of speech can only be coupled with the second amendment so far, a threat of death with revelation of a tool of death should be a crime, there is no excuse.

I dont know what HE was 'trained for' or what HIS job position responsibilities were. And again, a persons job is not always ALL encompassing, it is usually tasks WITHIN REASON. Like a doctor will not ALWAYS have training to assess EVERY illness when it is something foreign to MOST doctors.

A pilot is quite different, they save themselves, they save everyone else, they dont save everyone else, they die along with. This was not a situation where living meant that others would live, as in a pilot. Pilots have self preservation in mind like anyone else, it is a benefit that their travelers fate happens to be tied to them living.

This man lived and others died. and that is tragic. But it would be equally tragic if this man died knowing he would not be able to keep anyone else alive by doing so, and others STILL died. It would be tragic for HIS loved ones.

Even if the job is 'protect and save lives' dying without a plan that ties into saving life because one is 'expected' to go on and die a 'hero', would have done neither.

if they're hiring police like that, then it couldn't of happened any other way.... If he was to scared to at least try, then he shoulda never been a police/deputy to begin with... Good thing he quit so he won't be scared anymore...

So let me ask you this- if the police are to scared to help, then how will gun control ever work? Isn't that the whole premis of gun control? The police will protect you? You just said they won't, so our undeniable right to life is in jeopardy... He had a gun, and to scared to use it...poor kids put trust and faith in him for protection, and 17 of them died for that ill gained trust...

helping is not dying senselessly, just as we dont ask a police officer to try to fist fight someone with an uzi, we should not ask them to approach a situation without PROPER equipment and 'back up' to do so.

the premise of gun control, for me, is that there is no reason for citizens to walk around as if they are in the military ready to take out SQUADS of people in seconds

The police have training and resources to serve and protect, yes, often they do.

17 died because of the training of a kid who was emotionally unstable in an NRA supported program, who was able to get a gun that was easily modifiable, and ENTER a school and kill simply with a little pull of a trigger ... that same four minutes waiting for trained and equipped back up had no different effect than it would if it had been spent searching for the person that would end his life, except in the former he can grieve the 17 with his family, instead of his family grieving 18 alone.

oh, and by the way, there is inconsistency in how this mans ACTUAL job title is being reported, some state 'school resource officer' some 'deputy'

does anyone know the fact of his title and duties?

oh, and by the way, this was a 'school resource officer', not a sheriff or deputy of anything, its a bit less training and experience than sheriffs office or deputy might be.

just a tidbit of clarification happy
he was a full fledged deputy, sworn in and everything...school resource officer is just the title he was assigned to...
