It depends on your definition of "real friendship." I'd say a qualified yes.

Depends how deep the chat topics become. If you find the right person, it can easily turn into a very deep friendship.

As in the wizard of oz, getting to the emerald city began with the start of the yellow brick road...whatever a real friendship is, it has to have a starting point...and if it isn't "hi or hello or some salutation (verbal or nonverbal)", what other options can you identify?...And more importantly, when does an exchange qualify as chatting...(seems like trying to identify the exact point when night ends and day begins)...

Chatting or verbal in-consequence... sooner than later there has to be something of substance....you have to give of yourself and be of genuine help even if it is only to make people think....
