Topic: Help With A Folder | |
---|---|
Ok here is my problem. I downloaded Stardock and in the process I'm thinking I got a worm or something. My entire "moms docs" is now empty and in this new folder called "YOUR-and a whole bunch of numbers" when I click on anything like my paintshop or itunes it says I don't have access. Also I'm thinking it changed my files around like they are NTFS or FAT32... does anyone know how I can fix this. I have tried a system restore to a later date, but that didn't help. I went ahead and just made a new account on the pc and have all my programs, but none of the old things like pictures and that are able to come up on the new account. Please help if you can or understand whats happened.
Many thanks and hugs, Roxy |

Which OS are you running? It sounds like you can't access certain folders because you don't have administrative access. You can change this by going to your Start menu, then clicking Control Panel. Click User Accounts, then User Accounts again. Choose your account and then "Change My Account Type." Make it Administrator.
The reason you can't even see the folders that are in your original account when you sign on with your new account, is your original account has it's files and folders sharing turned off. You can turn sharing on, by going to Start, then My Computer. Right click on your folder (should be at the top right if you're logged in with your original account). Right click it and choose Sharing and Security. Make sure Make this Folder Private is unchecked. What OS are you running, and hopefully we can solve the rest of your problems. |

ok... here is a better explantion.
all the documents ie...pics, files, notepad files, all my music that was in the "moms doc" folder is now in this YOUR folder and my "mom" one is empty so this thing I got pulled ALL my docs and put them in the new one which I can't access. I can't access anything from the original mom and when I do lay my mouse on it it is empty. I have added a new adminstrator and it's still not letting me see anything. I have done everything you had described and it's still not letting me. I have even unchecked stuff that said... unhide and it goes right back to hiding them. What a cluster F I swear! I'm so pissed I could scream. I puked and cried for days. I am a graphics designer for online gaming and if it wasn't for my database I would be in a world of hurt right now. My OS is WinXP |

what are the file extensions?
if you know them, you might be able to do a search for *(file extension) and locate them that way (even access them). Example if they're all .doc then do a search for *.doc Or, if you know exact file names, search for that, and it will give you it's location, and possibly even be able to open it. |

By now I am sure you have it solved,,,, but do a system restore choosing a date prior to the download. Normally it does what you need...

Yeah, I agree with George up there, and then as soon as you BACK UP YOUR ORIGINAL FILES TO DISC (duh.) uninstall that pirated version of Stardock (I'm assuming) and delete all traces of it from the HD.
Good call George. What the hell are all those other yahoos talkin' about? People! We're here to HELP, not CONFUSE!! |

First off you might just have to take over the computer as Admin.(root), then you should be able to gain access to anything in the computer.
You might have to login as Administrator (root) from the welcome screen to gain access to the files or folders in question. If someone or some thing has taking over even that point, then a live Linux disk can allow you transfer of the files to somewhere else. |

Have you tried running chkdsk/scan disk and made sure it not cross linked file chains?

sounds like a virus a rather intersting one. System restore will no rid such viruses... hmm i suggest removing all you can and re-format.
But- if your computer literate try deleting 'MOM' and 'YOUR', accounts by going into the 'START' 'CONTROL PANEL' select 'USERS' then make a account named 'TEST'. delete both accounts then remake the 'MOM' account. Make sure anything you have saved that you need from the MY DOCUMENTS folder is moved onto disk, or move it into the a folder in the C: drive. This process will delete both accounts and hopefully delete such a virus. Also a Virus cannot change the File System from Fat32-NTFS. |

Everybody gives some advice but I would look at Spyware or a Virus so try AVG and Ad-aware...they both have free versions just do a google search. Something has hijacked your documents.

If you would have read the previous posts guys she has already tried sys restore and virus/spyware scans. Yes a virus can change it from fat32 to ntfs, ive had it happen. This is most likely a virus and a bad one at that. I have had a simalar virus befor only the one that got me could probably be considered it big brother. Your only option at this point realy is to try using your restoration disks if you still have them. If it is not effecting the rest of the computer and only those two files then you could try deleting the two folders but you will loose everything in the folders.

Cmon guys keep up with the convo. Those "yahoos" are giving her some good first steps to try to get access to her file before just dumping the whole thing. Cmon, I know what she is going through with this virus and belive me these types are very nasty. I hope you get this resloved, best of luck. |
