BIG SALE"..."FINAL SALE"..."WHOLESALE PRICES... Do you really believe that?
No. Caveat emptor. That's why capitalism is so great. A business can put up those signs, and you can go on the internet or walk into their competitor at the end of the mall and see if you can get what you want/need cheaper. You can measure or verify how much of a "sale" it is. It was interesting to see what happened to JCPenney when that Apple guy took over and tried to change the model from what the rest of the retail stores were doing. Marketing, consumer behavior and psychology is fascinating. all kind of signs and publicity...Do you really believe that?
Depends on the sign. "Danger...violators will be prosecuted...wrong way...no right on red...road construction ahead..." Some signs I believe, others I don't, some I simply follow because there's no real cost to doing so, some I don't believe or disbelieve but experiment with just because I feel like it. Depends on the publicity. That's the great thing about capitalism. I can go to competing news agencies and possibly get more relevant information to determine the veracity of the publicity and how it actually effects me other than an immediate emotional knee jerk reaction. |

I shop around. Sometimes even a sale price doesn't lower the price if u only need 1 of something

i love the way grocery stores use shelf placement of products
to condition consumers to ignore the unit pricing requirement of products... example: at eye level - vegetable oil with many brightly colored *on sale this week* tags $2.29 for a 32oz bottle...on either lowest or top shelf are 16oz bottles of the same brand of veg oil regular price $.99 cents apiece..with no bright tags calling attention to this price anywhere....they have reversed the psychology of "buying in quantity for less" and people now almost automatically reach for the 32oz bottle without a second thought and spend 32 cents more for the same amount of the same product... @ciretom yes i agree, most fascinating the psychology of conditioned response... edit: 31 cents more...i ran out of fingers and toes |

Buy and sell are only 2 economic transactions in daily life of offer and demand; but combined with strategy and psychology; these operations are part of a complex machine in all 4 economic areas (agriculture, industry, commerce and services).Sellers and buyers are in a daily combination of fight and need.

Two major stores recently closed down in my town. They had major sales to get rid of everything. One was a family business for around 100 years. They wanted to retire finally. The other store was a chain, going out of business. One building is for sale and I don't know about the other building.

I guess I'm lucky person, I hate shopping. I go to buy something only when I need it and then I buy exactly what I need. In grocery store I check the quality, not price. Organic products are more expensive anyway. All those sales leave me indifferent. I rather try stay away at this time from shopping-centers.
But yes, these are only sales-tricks. Most of the stores have margins for products about 100-200%. If merchants lower the price 40-60%, then they still make profit. Usually they make those sales for seasonal products and goods which didn't sell well with full price. |
