how do you make a long distance relationship work and how long can you go sustaining one to last ?

It's all a matter of the exact people. Some people can't or wont hang on when the separation is two blocks, or ten minutes. Others have a different view of existence and each other, and can stay true despite thousands of miles, and many years.

very few last...relationships need to be taken care of or they can dry up....you got into the relationship with expectations of getting something in return and so did the other person.....we all need to be good to ourselves by seeing to it that we get our needs met.....unless it's a game to reinforce a belief about yourself or others by keeping them or yourself at bay....really nobody can answer that question without knowing the two of you....the movie ""THE NOTEBOOK'' was about an exception...... |

It takes alot of trust in each other to make a long distance relationship work...
As for the sustainability it can last quite a while if you are friends first... Friendships really do not need constant contact. But if you meet up every couple of weeks or so you both have to be able to handle the logistics of it all. |

It takes very special people to keep a LDR alive and true along time.
My daughter met a nice young man online 4 years ago. He travelled to meet her after 2 years, he proposed, she accepted. One year later she traveled to Europe and spent 3 months with him... and she is doing that again on the first week of December. How they manage to keep their love alive? By being in touch every day, Skype, whatsapp.. I see they share most of what they are doing than people who actually live together! They fully trust each other and that is precious to see! As soon as she finishes college they will get married and she will move to live in Europe. LDR can work but not for those who are impatient/desperate. They take time, patience and trust. |

I have had really bad luck with LDRs. The only way I have seen them work is if one person moves, or both like having a "virtual relationship"...

By both committing to eliminating the distance, and communicating/proving progress towards that goal. how long can you go sustaining one to last
Personally, I wouldn't try it. I live in a city with 5+ million people. If I have to look outside of that, there's something wrong with me, and a long distance relationship would ultimately be a symptom, not a solution. |

Oh, we can't forget our military families. They would be examples of LDR's especially those that are beyond 10 yrs. I agree, it takes a specific type to give it a try vs those whirlwind, fly-by romances :P no thanks.

Military and away for work are a bit different than, meeting online and taking it from there, imho
