I don't think there is some generalization about this.

Different people, different needs...nowadays or ever...

As far as I know even the same person at different times may have different needs.

And for some there could be no bed partner if they can't find friendship in the same person....

Well friends do NOT sleep together.
(Only in movies..)
Because once you sleep with a friend they are NO longer your friend.

BUT a friendship that turns to lovers are the best relationships & the most likely to work.

I don't think modern times have really changed people as much as we like to think or pretend.

The creator made man & he made woman & so we do not have to be alone in a crazy world.
But we complicate it.

Bed partner has always been the same.. temporary satisfaction.
Nothing more & nothing less.

Group validation, support, and safety, as well as a need to relieve stress and anxiety in non destructive ways.

Some people get it via sex, some people get it via friendship.
Some people get it through lasertag leagues.

Almost every generation thinks they are the first one to "see life clearly," and that all generations past were the deluded ones. I've come to suspect this is actually due to something in our DNA, that drives us to spread out even more, for the overall safety of the species. Same basic reason while most teens suddenly feel hostility towards parents and other authorities, and get the urge to move away and start their own "race."

For more illumination on how much each generation ISN'T all that different, look up ancient graffiti. People wrote the same crap on walls thousand of years ago as now.
