NEW YORK -- A New York City millionaire who died this summer has bequeathed a $100,000 trust fund to care for her 32 pet cockatiels.

The New York Post reported Saturday that Leslie Ann Mandel's will asks that the small parrots continue living in an aviary at her $4 million East Hampton home.

The will names each bird, from Margie and Nicki to Zara and Zack 12.

With Mandel's stepson as trustee, the fund also will care for a cat named Kiki and a rescue dog named Frosty.

Mandel ran a fundraising firm and amassed a $5.3 million fortune. She died in June at age 69.

Other wills also have provided for pets. Hotel magnate Leona Helmsley left $12 million to her dog, Trouble. A judge trimmed the bequest to $2 million.

It's great to hear about someone that not only loved their pets very much, but also understood what animals are really like on the inside and what they deserve. Animals think and feel (both physically & emotionally) far more than most people comprehend and I think most people don't consider that animals get near zero input compared to people. Combined with an animals physical inability to communicate with us in a way we associate with they are often looked at as near mindless little biological machines that mostly only react by "instinct". It's good to see someone caring so much for fairly helpless living beings. This may sound sappy coming from a guy, but the truth is the truth and I'm all about truth. I have spent my entire adult life in search of it.

Not many people can put their pets in their will finding someone to tale care of them may be difficult. The women in the article had a unique opportunity not all pets are so lucky.

That does sound a bit weird. Interesting to see what the financial records look like I am surprised that was not looked into.

That's right. The whole purpose of a will is to provide for who or what we cared about in life. NOT who a judge or society or greedy relatives think.
Making it 'a trust' was the best move. Otherwise inheritance tax... each animal would of lost 30- 40% & there are 35 animals.
Of course is the step- son, executor violates the trust... well, then he is out on the street..

Article quote,

In this case I think Ms Helmsley was making a statement in death, that she couldn't say or do in life. Kinda of a " Screw you, my dog knows what unconditional love is, but the rest of you can kiss my a@@ "

I would of loved to have a fly on the wall, when her will was read. bigsmile
