MMmmmmmm speaking for myself...

I think it is something I give for free if I like the person.
And something that has to be earned if I don't like the person lol

To myself, I would define it as meaning:
Placing value on another person's opinions, thoughts, ideals, morals, principles, values, views and much much more...

Edit:
Handling disrespect...
This one needs thinking about, because I am a passive person and would not choose violence unless it is a last resort.

How do YOU define respect?

With a dictionary.

e.g.
- a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements

- a particular aspect, point, or detail.

- admire (someone or something) deeply, as a result of their abilities, qualities, or achievements

If you mean in a practical behavioral sense then I generally stay out of their way and defer to their choice to do something until they prove they can't do it, and I want to get it done.

Otherwise I'm not all that preoccupied if someone respects me or not.
Unless they have something I want that's dependent upon respect.
Like a job or promotion or continuing healthy relationship.

How do YOU handle disrespect?

Depends on what's involved.

Like is it my boss? Does he disrespect my work?
Could I lose my job?
Then I try harder, try and improve, or in some way get them to focus on my achievements and contributions rather than solely my failures.

Is it my friend? Can I lose the friendship? Or just earn more teasing or whatever? If I could lose the friendship then it depends on what's motivating the disrespect. If it's just earn teasing then I just tease back.

Is it someone I'm dating, just starting to date? I try to figure out what's going on. Maybe I break up with them.

Is it a partner/gf/spouse/family member? Then I figure out if they truly disrespect me (maybe I deserve disrespect from their perspective) or if they are simply adopting disrespectful behavior that's trying to cause me emotional harm because they're all butt hurt or something.

Is it just some stranger who can't really affect my life, just my feelings? I generally ignore it. I think I'm confident enough in myself that I don't need to rely on the respect of people that don't matter to me, and it's pointless to figure out why they feel disrespect towards me, as that would require some kind of continuing relationship with them.

Recognizing the value of another. Recognizing self-worth.

Try not to be pulled down by it and rise to the occasion.

How do YOU define respect?
How do YOU handle disrespect?

I define respect as treating someone the way I would like to be treated but also keeping in mind that every person are individuals so maybe they want something that applies to them. It pretty much comes down with giving everyone dignity in their space in the world.

Age, ability, and rank/senority rarely factor in but then I do tend to assume that with age and position maybe they know things I am not aware of and I generally try to figure I owe a little extra to that person until they prove other wise. If someone respects me I will knock myself out to respect them.

How do I handle disrespect?

Depends who does it, when, and where. It also depends on how long they have worn out the grace I may have given them for their ignorance or other extinuating circumstances.

I don't take a lot of garbage off people who think they know it all or have just discovered they have a little power in the world. Youth and strength physically does not impress me.

Nor does just having superior financial or educational or even raw talent because all to often that respect goes to other than the possessor.

Generally I will ignore an unintentional disrespect because I have a good handle on respecting myself regardless. Often times ignoring disrespect is the most painful punishment you can impose. Anyone who has been on line as long as I have has seen the chronic typical kinds of disrespect and I it is true there is no punishment that is worse than silence for a fool. You don't give the garbage and audience they wither with out the light.

If someone is being a jerk because they think they are entitled or just like to be a bully then I really enjoy messing up their day. I have gone out of my way to blow the whistle on people and enjoy doing it. I even like making and example out of that kind of disrespect because often people who do that kind of garbage won't see me as a threat.

If someone is just being disrespectful because they are frusterated then sometimes I can be pretty empathetic until they go too far then I lower the boom. Usually it takes only a few choice words in warning, or a look, but I give them a chance at redemption on a first offense and usually end up with a friend.

If I am the boss and I get some employee that thinks work is some kind of game then not only do I make their life truly miserable I will make it my mission to fire them. Usually how and when it will hurt them worst. Usually when I have documented such a case against them they are buried. Especially if I know there are good co-workers or customers who are suffering because they are ignoring my efforts to train them or get the job done so everyone benefits. I have no problem giving someone bad reviews or bad references any more than I have good ones. Since I consider my customers also my friends and my life blood I take it REALLY PERSONAL when and employee messes up.

I don't think I have ever disrespected a boss but I sure have as and employee that consistently gives and honest days work for my pay if they disrespect me I will stay long enough to find a better job and walk away. Usually when it will make their poor leadership very evident.
