a movie that scared the crap out of the whole world is Jaws. Ho many people has that movie affected? wont go into the ocean, or even hearing that all to familiar music in your head while swimming in a lake.

Jaws was a comedy. Poltergeist was freaky... Honestly I was looking in my rear view a lot after The Ring. I had a haunted copy of The Exorcist. Really. Still gives me chills. 28 Days Later was too real. But The Happening scared the bejesus out of me. I don't consider any of the Hannibal movies as scary, they are more detective/mystery and excellent.

The Descent is my number one choice, then I'd recommend The Strangers and Wolf Creek.

I just watched 1408 last night.. pretty scary flick.. I don't think it is the scariest.. but it keeps you glued to what is going on.. a lot of twists.

One of the scariest for me was the original Japanese Ringu aka The Ring, The Changeling with George C Scott is another, also Dead Birds, Session 9. More recently- Absentia, Lovely Molly, The Pact, The Innkeepers, Sleep Tight.

Two scarred me that I can recall.
'Play Misty For Me' a Clint Eastwood movie.
And 'Ten to Midnight' a Charles Bronson movie.

I remember the Eastwood one. What a horror about a crazy stalker! That's the predecessor to "Fatal Attraction".

I agree with you about Jaws when it first came out it made me nervous about going in the ocean, another one for me was the first 15 minutes of the movie "Saving Private Ryan" it just took my breath away and knowing it was true added on to the effect.

Jaws of course!! I will admit...couldn't even take a bath without thinking I was going to hear that damned music scared
Poltergeist was another one that scared me, but it was beautiful too. When mom was calling to CarolAnn and she came running down the stairs and "through" her. Mom could "smell" CarolAnn.....very powerful scene for me and I wasn't even a mom yet. shades
