As a Brit I thought I'd throw my tuppence into the discussion.
The following are off the top of my head and two I remember fondly are. Bananas should not be too bendy? We should no longer buy eggs by the dozen, it should be by weight? These are rules which some a$$ hole from God know's where tells us to follow. We have been promised a referendum on Europe???? yeah right, and I'd be surprised if we vote to stay in. If only we could bring back Maggie Thatcher, I'm sure she'd tell Europe where they can stick their not too bendy bananas. |

ok, we should just invade Canada and Mexico, have all of North America to ourselves, maybe Cuba as well, then the gulf of mexico would be all ours... still not sure what Canada brings to the table.... Abundance of fresh water, timber, oil, uranium, gold, diamonds, silver, brains, etc. the timber and oil would be a HUGE plus for the US.. that's for SURE.. specially with what's recently transpired with the oil sands dispute and all.. plus, some of you may not know, Canadian timber is being sold to the US and overseas by the truckloads at a LESSER cost than the current Canadian buyers rates.. just saying.. the US would undoubtedly consume that as well and leave Canada looking somewhat like a barren wasteland.. again citing, Canada would be 'conquered'. that said, I could add.. we'd bring value, moral fiber and diversity, all great pluses in maintaining healthy bowels! |

Hi ((((((( ZEE ))))))) ...Love hearing these responses and mostly because I agree with much of what is being said :-)...If the OP was talking about a U.S./Mexico merge I might look at it a little differently... ... Cultures, health care, taxes, gun laws and legal systems would all make it very hard to merge Canada and the US...I suppose the upside would be stronger national security, resource independence, development capital and job creation through development of Canada's huge northern landmass, BUT I see such a merger as being far more advantageous to the US than to Canada and that in itself would create the potential for unrest and problems that neither country NEEDS or WANTS... (((leigh))) that's why we get along so well.. like minds and all there's nothing stated above I can find dispute with.. in a nutshell.. that's exactly what would happen, there's no great advantage for us.. and totally agree.. we don't need OR want any of that either.. |

In response to the original post...
Canada can't afford us. And I don't mean that Canada is poor, or their economy isn't robust - it's just they keep bragging about the quality of their government-sponsored healthcare, but they only have a bit more than 10% of the U.S. total population (Canada 35,160,000 citizens, the U.S. 316,130,000 citizens according to a basic internet search). Imagine trying to implement Canada's system of healthcare on that scale, in a quick enough time for it to actually affect the union of the two countries (as opposed to generations down the road). Also, I'm not a fan of the opportunity to live in Canada's "climate options" - which are basically "cold", "colder", and "coldest". I'm a SoCal boy. I need my summer sun and temperate winters. |

Besides, they remind Politicians how bent they are themselves! Our Stinkers in Bern just bring us into the EU by Increment,as to avoid an Obligatory Referendum! Last one went disastrous for those Idiots who want to go to Brussels to polish the Benches there with their Arses on our Money! |

HELL NO!!!! Why would we want to combine their socialistic government with ours? I love the Canadian people, but when I was in Canada, all I heard from them is bitching about how screwed up was their government. A better idea would be for Canada to merge with Portugal, a lovely country with nice beach property. They could then name their country Porta-can! And when I'm in the States, or even on these forums, I hear / see the same from Americans regarding their government. So the difference is what exactly? Found this where the author discusses her book. She gives some food for thought. Diane Francis, "Merger of the Century: Why Canada and America Should Become One Country" |
