Topic: The Birthday | |

This is a poem I wrote back when I was in high school. I hope it makes you think about any life-altering decisions you may one day make...
The Birthday Today is my birthday And just like every year My mother came to visit me A meeting I hold dear She brought along a present Only a single rose A gift of pure love That only a mother knows Her voice was soft and kind Recalling birthdays past Wondering how her little girl Grew up way too fast She remembered every birthday Good, bad and in between And neither of us could forget The day I turned eighteen My friends threw me a party No parents were allowed It was my first birthday Without mom in the crowd Everyone was drinking And I thought it was cool Since the party was for me I couldn't play the fool So I began to drink too Until it was time to go home Looking back now, I know I should have picked up the phone I didn't call my mom that night Too scared of what she'd see Instead, I stumbled to my car Got in and turned the key I saw the hurt on mother's face As she recalled that night But she said that she forgives me Although I wasn't right Today is my birthday And to show her love for me My mother brought a flower And just her company But as the tears formed in her eyes I knew I was to blame As she laid the rose by the tombstone Underneath my name |
